Meanwhile, their dot plot of individual forecasts has an extra rate cut in for 2024 so they now have 75bp of easing pencilled in versus 50bp in their September update. But note, too, that the final rate hike predicted in September is no longer there so the Fed funds rate is now expected to be 4.6% at the end of 2024 versus 5.1% previously. While not fully reflecting the 110bp of cuts priced by markets ahead of the meeting, this shift in viewpoint from officials has given the market the greenlight to push for more - the Fed is viewed as a pretty conservative institution that heavily weighs up the implications of what it says - and this is a surprise shift in outlook from them.

Love the artical and the spinner chick doll. The colors in your wool are just awesome. I am in Newfoundland Canada and i am new to rug hooking, hope to use some of your fibers in a rug someday. Shared the page link on my FB ?

I have enjoyed getting to know the inner creative process from these wonderful artists! Wonderful interview, and I agree Suzy needs to come visit the U.S., maybe she would like to visit the Fiber fest in Sarasota, ? beaches, sun, and spinning all in one, and then I would get the chance to meet her!!

As Sichtermann noted, If you go back to the original proton spin puzzle, where we learned that the sum of the quark and antiquark spins accounts for just a fraction of proton spin, the next questions are what is the gluon contribution? What is the contribution from the orbital motion of the quarks and gluons? But also, why is the quark contribution so small? Is it because of a cancellation between quark and antiquark spin contributions? Or is it because of differences between different quark flavors?

This week, the same group describes another surprise finding in a different 2D magnetic material: Behavior presumed to be due to a wave of spin oscillations is actually due to vibrations in the lattice.

I MADE A PIZZA PIE! If you think there is nothing better than spin dip, you are wrong. Spin dip pizza is the most delicious thing in the entirety of spin dip and pizza. The crunchy crust creates the perfect compliment to the ooegy, gooey, cheesy topping. Plus, the fresh, juicy tomatos and artichokes add the perfect tangy/sweetness. And, of course, I added liberal dashes of crushed red pepper to give every orgasmic bite the right amount of kick.

Science often surprises us. An idea that seems only of academic concern sparks a thought that cascades into new directions, and every so often, one of them leads to a transforming technology. Without the first basic-science step, such a process would be impossible. The spin Hall effect (SHE) is a fascinating example of that scientific multibranching process that also demonstrates how fundamental research is essential for future technology.

The effect is relatively easy to describe. When current flows in a nonmagnetic solid, the moving electrons can feel a spin-dependent deflecting force perpendicular to their velocity. That force drives spin-up electrons predominantly to one side and spin-down electrons predominantly to the other. The result, as illustrated in figure 1a, is a spin current perpendicular to the charge current.

For a team that have traditionally been suspicious of using spinners, South Africa surprised by naming a three-pronged spin attack in the Group B match at the Feroz Shah Kotla in New Delhi and the tweakers did not let them down.

Further surprises awaited as skipper Graeme Smith opened the attack with off-spinner Johan Botha, a move that appeared to inspire his West Indies counterpart Darren Sammy who did the same with left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn.

Botha (2-48) and his Pakistan-born, streaked-hair spin colleague Imran Tahir (4-41) wrecked in tandem, while pacer Dale Steyn devoured the tail to skittle out West Indies for 222 inside the 48th over.

"This measurement shows that the quark piece of the proton spin puzzle is made of several pieces," said James Drachenberg, a deputy spokesperson for STAR from Abilene Christian University. "It's not a boring puzzle; it's not evenly divided. There's a more complicated picture and this result is giving us the first glimpse of what that picture looks like."

It's not the first time that scientists' view of proton spin has changed. There was a full-blown spin "crisis" in the 1980s when an experiment at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) revealed that the sum of quark and antiquark spins within a proton could account for, at best, a quarter of the overall spin. RHIC, a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science user facility for nuclear physics research at Brookhaven National Laboratory, was built in part so scientists could measure the contributions of other components, including antiquarks and gluons (which "glue" together, or bind, the quarks and antiquarks to form particles such as protons and neutrons).

"We call these pairs the quark sea," Drachenberg said. "At any given instant, you have quarks, gluons, and a sea of quark-antiquark pairs that contribute in some way to the description of the proton. We understand the role these sea quarks play in some respects, but not in respect to spin."

The latest data include signals captured by STAR's endcap calorimeter, which picks up particles traveling close to the beamline forward and rearward from each collision. With this new data added to data from particles emerging perpendicular to the collision zone the scientists have narrowed the uncertainty in their results. The data show definitively, for the first time, that the spins of up antiquarks make a greater contribution to overall proton spin than the spins of down antiquarks.

This ground-breaking discovery significantly advances our fundamental understanding of how spin currents travel in topological materials, providing valuable insights into the behaviour of these intriguing systems.

Just as a tree requires pruning to maintain its shape and health, the edge states of a topological material also need to be tailored to adapt towards various applications in electronics and spintronics.

The research team successfully achieved the objective of extracting a new type of edge spin current in a 2D topological material, planar bismuthine, by proposing a novel method to manipulate edge states through bulk-edge interactions, similar to the pruning work done in gardening routines.

This groundbreaking discovery will significantly advance our fundamental understanding of how spin currents travel in topological materials, providing valuable insights into the behaviour of these intriguing systems.

Beyond offering an alternative form of topological protection, the exciting potential of TCI goes further. The research team has uncovered an unconventional type of spin transport hidden within the edge of two-dimensional TCI bismuthene, a phenomenon previously overlooked in prior reports.

"While the common belief is that TCI exhibits the same edge transport mode observed in topological insulators, where each stream of spin current (spin-up or spin-down) strictly travels in one direction, our findings reveal that TCI planar bismuthene hosts a new type of spin transport protected by mirror symmetry," explains lead author Dr Yuefeng Yin, a research fellow at Monash.

This new-found spin transport mode unlocks innovative design concepts for topological devices, enabling support for "both pure charge current without net spin transport, and pure spin currents without net charge transport" -- a possibility not comprehensible in conventional understanding of topological materials.

"While identical spin-polarised streams travelling in opposing directions may not seem immediately useful, they offer new opportunities for spin manipulation that are otherwise inaccessible in other topological materials."

The research team anticipates that this computational breakthrough will inspire further follow-up studies, both experimental and theoretical, to fully harness the potential of this novel edge transport in electronic and spintronic applications.

Following the discovery of an unconventional spin texture in 2D TCI planar bismuthene, the research team's objective is to extract the exotic spin currents from the entangled edge bands by utilizing bulk-edge interactions.

"This is crucial for further investigating the unconventional spin texture we have identified. Another advantage of this approach is that we can retain the protection offered by the intact bulk-edge correspondence."

Through the use of a large external electric field and weak substrate potential, the research team can isolate the unconventional spin texture within the edge, effectively concealing the conventional spin transport components in the bulk.

The research team has also demonstrated the ability to revert the edge region back to a fully conventional spin transport setup, akin to what is observed in topological insulators, by applying substrate potentials to selective orbitals.

Prof. Nikhil Medhekar remarks "This is a truly remarkable finding. Not only have we uncovered a new type of edge spin texture in topological materials, but we have also demonstrated an effective way to manipulate and preserve it while maintaining the rigorous bulk-edge topology." 17dc91bb1f
