Several projects are available in the area of numerical modelling of mechanical response of composites. It is desired that the candidates are famiiar with the theory of stress analysis in solids and have some working knowledge in any programming language (e.g. Fortran/MATLAB).
You need to formally apply for admission to the Mechanical Engineering Department, IIT Kanpur. Admissions take place twice a year, in May and in December. Please keep an eye on the departmental website for admission announcements.
At IIT Kanpur, the students are asked to choose a suitable supervisor by the end of the first semester. If you are interested to work in our group, it is very important that you write directly to the PI Dr. Supratik Mukhopadhyay (smukh@iitk.ac.in) at the beginning of the first semester. This would help you with the proper course selection (course selection is finalised by the end of the first week of the semester) and to carry out research in our lab. While emailing, please also attach your CV.
Research in our lab combines experimental, analytical and computational methods, and therefore the following courses are suggested as prerequisites:
ME621 - Introduction to solid mechanics
ME623 - Finite element methods in engineering mechanics
ME727 - Composite materials
ME679 - Damage mechanics of composite materials
ME728 - Fracture and fatigue
ME676 - Non-linear finite element method in solid mechanics
While selecting courses, please also keep in mind the departmental requirements, that can be found here.
PLEASE NOTE: Before you apply to our lab, make sure you have taken a subset of the above courses in your first semester. Otherwise your application will not be considered favourably.
