If you want professional-grade monitoring for studio work, gaming, or critical listening where wired precision matters most, choose Superlux HD681B; if you need a wireless companion with long battery life and customizable bass for your daily commute or workout sessions, choose JLab Studio.
• Superlux HD681B: Delivers an incredibly wide frequency range (10 Hz to 30 kHz) with balanced, accurate sound in a semi-open design, but requires a wired connection and lacks active noise cancellation.
• JLab Studio: Offers 30+ hours of Bluetooth 5 playtime, three distinct EQ modes for instant sound shaping, and a foldable, lightweight build, though it sacrifices the extended high-frequency detail of the open-back model.
• Who it's for: The Superlux is the pick for home audio enthusiasts and gamers who prioritize sonic accuracy over mobility, while the JLab Studio fits the active user who needs freedom from cables and all-day power.
The Superlux HD681B is built for people who treat their audio experience as a serious hobby or a professional necessity. These headphones feature 50mm dynamic drivers that push the boundaries of what you might expect at this price point, delivering a frequency response that stretches from a deep 10 Hz up to a crisp 30 kHz. This isn't just marketing fluff; it means you get a soundstage that feels expansive, capturing every instrument and vocal nuance with exceptional resolution. If you are mixing tracks, tracking vocals, or simply want to hear exactly what was recorded without coloration, the semi-open design provides that "in-hall" experience where the music breathes around you.
Comfort is another major pillar here, specifically designed for marathon listening sessions. Weighing in at only 277 grams, these cans are surprisingly light despite their robust metal and plastic construction. The earpads are soft vinyl, and the headband self-adjusts to fit different head shapes, ensuring that pressure doesn't build up after an hour of use. This makes them ideal for the gamer who stays glued to a match or the producer who spends eight hours behind a DAW. However, because they are semi-open, they do not seal out the world. You will hear ambient noise entering the room, and anyone sitting near you will hear your music leaking out. They are strictly for quiet environments.

You should buy the Superlux HD681B if you have a dedicated space for listening where you can control the environment. The single-sided 2.5-meter cable gives you plenty of room to move around a desk or gaming chair without the cord getting tangled, and the gold-plated connector ensures a stable signal. But if you are looking for something to throw in a gym bag or wear on a busy street, this isn't the right tool. The lack of a battery means you never worry about charging, but you are tethered to your source device via a 3.5mm jack. It is a pure, unadulterated audio experience for those who value fidelity above convenience.
In contrast, the JLab Studio Wireless is engineered for movement and versatility. Its primary strength lies in its ability to keep going without interruption. With a claimed 30+ hours of playtime on a single charge, you can listen for days without hunting for a wall outlet. This is powered by Bluetooth 5 technology, which maintains a stable connection up to 30 feet away from your device. Whether you are walking through a large house, working in a different room, or heading to the gym, the freedom from wires is transformative. The headphones also feature a feather-light build at just 141 grams, making them significantly lighter than many competitors, so you barely notice they are on your ears during a long run or commute.
Sound customization is where the JLab Studio truly shines for the average listener. Instead of a flat, neutral profile that might require external equalizers, it comes with the EQ3 Sound system. You can switch between JLab Signature, Balanced, and Bass Boost modes directly on the earcup buttons. This is perfect for someone who wants more punch when they are lifting weights or need a balanced tone for podcasts without fiddling with app settings. The plush circular ear cups use Cloud Foam and faux leather, providing a soft seal that offers passive sound isolation. While not active noise cancellation, this helps block out some background chatter, making it suitable for noisy offices or public transit.
This product is best suited for the person who lives an active lifestyle and needs gear that adapts to their day. The earcups rotate 80 degrees and fold up compactly, fitting easily into a backpack or even a palm. You also get built-in controls for track skipping, volume adjustment, and call handling, along with a microphone for voice assistants. However, the trade-off is in the audio ceiling. The frequency range tops out at 20 kHz, which is standard for consumer electronics but falls short of the Superlux's 30 kHz extension. If you are an audiophile chasing absolute clarity in the upper registers, you might find the JLab slightly less detailed, but for 99% of real-world scenarios, the convenience and battery life make it the superior choice.
• Best for battery life → JLab Studio: With 30+ hours of playback versus a non-stop wired connection, the JLab wins for travel and long days.
• Best for sound detail and range → Superlux HD681B: The 10 Hz to 30 kHz response offers a wider spectrum than the 20 Hz to 20 kHz limit of the JLab.
• Best for workouts and commuting → JLab Studio: The wireless design, sweat-friendly materials, and secure fit make it the clear winner for physical activity.
• Best for studio mixing and gaming → Superlux HD681B: The semi-open acoustic design and balanced tuning provide the accuracy needed for professional tasks.
• Best portability → JLab Studio: They fold flat and weigh half as much as the Superlux, making them easier to carry anywhere.
• Best for long-term comfort → Tie: Both offer soft padding and adjustable headbands, though the Superlux is heavier while the JLab is lighter.
• Best for controlling sound signature → JLab Studio: The onboard EQ3 buttons let you change bass levels instantly without an app.
• Best value for money → Depends on usage: Check the current price on Amazon to see which fits your budget better, as both offer strong features for their respective categories.
If I were buying a pair of headphones today specifically for my workout routine, I would choose the JLab Studio. The ability to go wireless with Bluetooth 5, combined with the massive 30-hour battery life, eliminates the frustration of tangled cords and dead batteries mid-session. The Bass Boost mode is a game-changer for keeping energy up during exercise, and the foldable design fits perfectly in my gym bag. However, for any time I am sitting down at my desk to focus on music production or immersive gaming, I would switch back to the Superlux HD681B because no wireless connection can match the purity and spatial accuracy of those 50mm drivers. Ultimately, the JLab Studio is the practical choice for an active life, while the Superlux remains the specialist tool for critical listening.
While the JLab Studio are excellent on-ear headphones for workouts due to their wireless freedom and secure fit, they are not earbuds. If you strictly need in-ear models, you might look elsewhere, but for over-the-ear performance with bass boost, they are a top contender.
No, the Superlux HD681B uses a semi-open design that relies on passive isolation. They allow ambient sound in, which is great for awareness but means they won't block out loud gym noises like the sealed JLab Studio might.
The JLab Studio features a dedicated Bass Boost EQ mode that enhances low frequencies significantly. This makes them a strong candidate for those seeking powerful bass without needing heavy subwoofers or external speakers.
If your priority is sound quality and you don't mind being tethered to a device, the Superlux HD681B offers a wider frequency range and better detail retrieval than many similarly priced wireless models.
