The light of day has gone. The west
glows bright with clouds of golden hue.
The desert life that shuns the day
Creeps forth to bid the sun adieu.
Down from the mountain breathes the wind;
The night hawk darts with eerie cry,
While starkly stands the desert growth
In silhouette against the sky.

About Sunsick
Sunsick is an original composition for concert band intended to explore the nighttime mischief of desert wildlife. A tone poem, it draws inspiration from the writing styles of contemporary composers, namely Robert W. Smith, whose works I played prolifically throughout my career as a musician, and Danny Elfman's work on the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack. The general premise of the piece follows the day-to-night transition of the Arizona desert; in avoidance of the oppressive midday heat, its inhabitants take advantage of the cover of dark to go about their business. Sunsick is meant to convey the drunken jubilation of nightlife; a play on both the zoological and social sense of the term. In other words, when the sun sets, desert critters get to partying.
I hope that Sunsick is just as fun to listen to as it was to create. Explore the lefthand headings to find out more!
