Sunmica are typically made with paper and polymer layers.
Paper impregnated with Phenolic resin is stacked in multiple layers with a printed decorative layer on top. The topmost layer may be paper or a polymer with a pattern printed or embossed into it. This stack of sheets is then compressed in a press and may even be heated to cure the laminate. Using a textured pressure plate can give different types of textured finished to the sheet.
These laminates provide decorative as well as protective advantage. The wood backing provides rigidity and strength to the laminate, and gets fixed to a table top, or any other furniture surface. The color and design that is visible on top is printed on a special paper used for laminate making. Other functional properties of the laminate top surface, such as scratch resistance, heat resistance, etc, is provided by the choice of thermosetting resin. The laminate top surface can be provide glossy or a matte finish.
