Dr. Sunilkumar T. C. is a Senior Researcher at the Department of Earth and Space Sciences at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) in Shenzhen, China, following two years of postdoctoral research in the same department.
Dr. Sunil earned his Ph.D. from the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (CSIR 4PI) in Bangalore, India, where his doctoral thesis investigated seismogenesis along the Himalayan and Indo-Burmese arcs. His work employed kinematic rupture modeling and stress inversion to enhance our understanding of significant earthquakes in these regions. He received the prestigious INSPIRE Fellowship from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), India, recognizing his outstanding academic achievements.
He holds a Master’s degree in Marine Geophysics from Cochin University of Science and Technology, where he graduated with First Rank. He also earned a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from Kannur University, Kerala.
At SUSTech, his current research involves developing a 3-D dynamic rupture model to estimate ground motion in seismically hazardous areas, addressing complexities such as fault geometry and irregular topography through advanced numerical simulations.
Previously, Dr. Sunil served as a Project Scientist at the Seismology Observatory of CSIR-NGRI, where he conducted in-depth seismicity analysis and moment tensor inversion. His extensive field experience includes earthquake seismological studies in the Central Himalayan seismic gap and GPS surveys in the Andaman Nicobar Islands.
He is passionate about integrating earthquake physics and dynamic rupture simulations to assess seismic hazards and improve our understanding of crustal deformation. His research interests also encompass spatio-temporal seismicity patterns, seismic tomography, and mining-related earthquakes.
In addition to his research, Dr. Sunilkumar has contributed to numerous publications in reputable journals and has presented his findings at various scientific conferences. He is actively involved in the seismological community and serves as a reviewer for multiple scientific journals.
