CEPLR

Centre for Photonics and LIDAR Research (CEPLR) has been established in – 2011 under the MoU between Hindustan University and IISc, Bengaluru for collaborative research on the role of atmospheric effects in Free Space Optical Communication (FSO). Investigations carried out using the equipments at CEPLR are capable of providing valuable information for Optical Remote Sensing, Free Space Optical Communication, Atmospheric Correction, etc. The centre is working closely with the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering since its inception.

CEPLR has been recognized as one of the Associated Institutions by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), Ministry of Earth Sciences, Ministry of Science & Technology and Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) through the National Carbonaceous Aerosol Program (NCAP) devised under the aegis of the Indian Network for Climate Change Assessment (INCCA). We conduct regular outreach and training sessions for disseminating the knowledge to research as well as students community. Our students visits for project oriented learning in national labs such as national remote sensing centre (NRSC), and Centre for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (CAOS), IISc.

We carry out investigations to estimate the atmospheric refractive fluctuations characterized through the structure parameter using diverse techniques. Our lab has developed a user interface for real-time measurement of atmospheric thermodynamic parameters and calculation of structure constant.

Free Space Optical (FSO) communication is a line of sight technology, where data laden optical signals propagate through the atmosphere. The random fluctuations in the atmosphere leads to wave-front distortion and signal degradation at the receiver. Continuously varying nature of the signal - both temporally and spatially - makes the retrieval of information more difficult. Wave front distortion of laser beam propagating through the atmosphere has been studied extensively and have limiting effects on the performance of communication systems. CEPLR has developed a controlled lab environment to conduct such studies.
