Sunghyun Choi is a tenured professor in the School of Electrical Engineering at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) since April 2026. His research focuses on AI-native network architectures, autonomous network operations, and next-generation wireless and mobile systems.
Prior to joining KAIST, he was Corporate Executive Vice President at Samsung Electronics, where he led the Advanced R&D Team at Samsung Networks and spearheaded the development of Samsung CognitiV NOS, an AI-powered, cloud-native platform for network automation across planning, deployment, operation, and optimization. He also served as Head of the Advanced Communications Research Center at Samsung Research, leading research and standardization in 6G, 5G Advanced, and IoT connectivity.
Previously, he was a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Seoul National University (SNU) from 2002 to 2019, where he also served as Vice Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Engineering. He began his career at Philips Research USA as a Senior Member of Research Staff. He was also a visiting associate professor at Stanford University from 2009 to 2010.
He received his B.S. (summa cum laude) and M.S. degrees from KAIST in 1992 and 1994, respectively, and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1999. He has co-authored over 270 technical papers, with an h-index of 68, and holds over 200 patents. He is an IEEE Fellow.
