Hi, I am Sungbok.

I am a 5th year Ph.D. Candidate in Computer Science at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD). I live in Greenbelt, a small town in the suburbs of Washington D.C..

I am currently a member of VisTeam at the Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory (HCIL), working with Dr. Niklas Elmqvist. Prior to coming to UMD, I worked with Dr. Jaegul Choo as a master's student in Computer Science and Engineering at Korea University, from Mar. 2017 to Feb. 2019. I earned my bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Engineering / Mathematics (dual degree), also at Korea University in Feb. 2017.

My research contributes to the fields of Data Visualization and Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HCAI). I try to understand how existing machine learning models learn humans' perceptions while looking at visualizations. Also I try to think of ways to use the acquired knowledge to improve visualization design.

I also worked on topics such as (1) situated visualizations (embedding data visualization to the World) and (2) urban analytics (topic-driven anomalous event detection in urban areas).

My email addresses are sbshin90@cs.umd.edu, or sb.shin.mail@gmail.com. Either of them is fine. Here is my CV.
