Our Curriculum

At Sunflower Meadow Preschool, our curriculum is thoughtfully designed to support the holistic development of each child. We follow a play-based, child-centred approach, inspired by Montessori principles and aligned with the South African CAPS framework to ensure children are well prepared for Grade R and beyond.

We believe that young children learn best through play, exploration, and meaningful experiences. Our curriculum supports children’s emotional, social, physical, cognitive, and language development in a safe, nurturing environment where every child is encouraged to learn at their own pace.

CAPS-Aligned Learning Areas

Our curriculum incorporates the key CAPS learning areas for early childhood development:

Life Skills

Life Skills form the foundation of our programme across all age groups. Children develop independence, self-care, emotional awareness, social skills, and physical development through practical life activities, movement, music, outdoor play, and daily routines. These experiences help children build confidence, resilience, and positive relationships.

Mathematics

Early Mathematics is introduced in a hands-on and age-appropriate way. Children explore number concepts, counting, sorting, patterns, shapes, measurement, and problem-solving through guided play and everyday activities. Learning is practical and engaging, helping children develop strong early numeracy skills without pressure.

Language Development

Language development is nurtured through storytelling, songs, rhymes, conversations, role play, and early literacy activities. Children are encouraged to express themselves, listen attentively, and build vocabulary. Older children are gently introduced to pre-reading and pre-writing skills to support school readiness.

Learning Through Play

Play is at the heart of our curriculum. We use a balance of guided play and free play to encourage creativity, curiosity, and independence. Guided play allows teachers to introduce new concepts and skills, while free play gives children the freedom to explore, imagine, and develop problem-solving skills naturally.

Thematic Learning

Our curriculum is structured around age-appropriate themes that help children make sense of the world around them. Themes integrate Life Skills, Mathematics, and Language, allowing learning to be meaningful, connected, and enjoyable.

Practical Life & Independence

Inspired by Montessori principles, practical life activities are included daily. These activities help children develop fine motor skills, concentration, responsibility, and independence. Tasks such as pouring, cleaning up, dressing, and caring for their environment build confidence and self-esteem.

School Readiness

As children progress through the preschool, the curriculum gradually supports school readiness. Older children are guided to develop listening skills, concentration, early literacy and numeracy, independence, and confidence, ensuring a smooth and positive transition into Grade R.

A Safe and Supportive Environment

Our curriculum is delivered in a safe, structured, and nurturing environment, where each child’s individual needs are respected. Teachers observe and support children’s development continuously, working closely with parents to ensure each child thrives.
