Note: Pointillism is a style that has been retroactively applied to Seurat's art due to his brushstrokes, but he used the terms Divisionism and Chromoluminarism (after the scientific optical mixing of colors). However, Pointillism it is still closely associated with A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Therefore, many of the external resources featured will refer to Pointillism.

If you're looking for fun and deeper engagement for all ages, The Courtauld holds a collection of Seurat's paintings and has created this thought-provoking family activity.

Drinks with the Dramaturg

Building upon and adapting an activity I created and hosted for the cast and crew, the audience and I tried our hands at painting with dots and bringing to light some of the

Cast & Crew

During our first dramaturgical encounter, I presented the cast with the opportunity to paint in a chromoluminarist style. They were given the 11 colors used in chromoluminarism and asked to fingerpaint inside line drawings of Spot the dog and Yvonne's parasol. They were then asked to think of their characters as these individual colors. When two characters are each their own color do they make a third color together but then fourth and fifth colors with other pairings? What does it mean to be on the cutting edge?

Field Trip

During our second dramaturgical encounter, I took the cast to The Barnes Foundation for individualized, curated tours based upon their characters in the musical. Participants were asked to spend 5-10 minutes with each piece, to fully take in its minutiae. They were asked many, many questions and came up with a multitude of insightful answers. What connections or stories existed between an entire wall of artworks? What rich inner lives are being depicted, and what in the paintings tells that story? What lives are missing?
