John Kelly enters his fourth season leading the Ave Maria Softball program after posting a 49-28 non-conference record and 61-64 overall record during his first three seasons at AMU.
Despite the Coronavirus shutdown, Ave Softball enjoyed a record breaking 2020 season with a program best 14 game win streak and 16-3 start to the season, as well as the highest overall win percentage of .792 as Team XI rolled to an overall 19-5 record. The Lady Gyrenes recorded a 4-2 record against ranked and receiving votes opponents and outscored their opponents 175-76 for the season.
The team batting average of .367 was best in program history and 8th best in the NAIA. Team XI also ranked #2 in stolen bases with 94; #7 in runs scored (a program record 7.29 runs/game), #9 in hits, #9 in triples and #13 in ERA at a program best 1.95.
John was previously an assistant coach on the staff at NCAA Division I Georgia Tech in 2016-2017. While at Georgia Tech, John was responsible for hitting, outfield, base running and mental game instruction as well as in game defensive positioning. During his time at Tech, John was instrumental in boosting the Yellow Jacket's offensive production over 30 percent, particularly in the ACC where Tech ranked near the top of the conference in home runs, runs scored, doubles, walks, on base percentage, hit by pitch, and slugging percentage.
