Title: Searching for the Unknown: Parameter Selection in Topological Data Visualization
Abstract: Topological data analysis (TDA) uses methods from topology (think squishy geometry) to study the underlying structure and “shape” of a dataset. The Mapper algorithm is a popular tool for visualization and data exploration in TDA with applications ranging from discovering new types of breast cancer to classifying plants. However, it is difficult to use the Mapper algorithm because the user needs to input values for several parameters, and the "best" values are unknown. In this talk, I'll introduce Mapper and how my collaborators, students, and I have approached parameter selection in this setting. Along the way, I'll share some of my career path including how I got involved in the TDA community and became interested in this problem.
Directions:
All activities will take place at Science Hall at the northeast corner of campus.
SUNY New Paltz campus: -Directions- , -Interactive Map- , -Printable Map-
Guidelines for presentation:
Undergraduate students interested in presenting their research who register accordingly will be notified on Saturday, September 20, 2025. The registration deadline for presentation is September 13th.
Each presentation should devote 15 minutes to research, concluding with an additional 5 minutes to answer the following questions about the research experience:
Where was your research conducted?
What was the application process like?
With whom was your research conducted? How did this selection occur?
What was the day-to-day research experience like? Did it change over the summer?
What was the hardest thing about your research experience?
What surprised you the most about your research experience?
What did you enjoy the most about your research experience?
What did you enjoy the most about related experiences outside of research?
