Hoopla allows you to stream over 500,000 titles, including eBooks and eAudiobooks, comics, movies, episodes of tv, and even music albums. You can sign out 2 titles per month.

Loan Length of items varies on the type of content you are borrowing:
Movies and TV episodes = 3 days
Music = 7 days
Audiobooks, eBooks, comics = 21 days

The following tutorial is based off of signing out an audiobook on the web based platform. Different content will have different views or functions.

Welcome to hoopla

To start using hoopla, click "Getting Started". 

Getting Started

You will need to complete a registration page to be able to use hoopla's services.

Getting Started

Type in Marigold Library System or scroll to find it in the list provided. Once that has been selected, click "Next".

Getting Started

Enter your Marigold barcode and click the "I agree" box. This box just means that hoopla and the public library system can communicate to ensure your account is in good standing. Good standing would mean that there are no fines on your account and your account has not expired.

The next dialogue box that will appear will ask you to input an email address and create a password. Please use your school email and choose a strong password that you will remember.

Exploring hoopla

On its main page, you can explore the collection hoopla has to offer. Use the "Browse" option to the left of the search bar to see content for audiobooks, comics, eBooks, movies, music, tv, as well as the BingePass. 

Advanced Search

If you are need to narrow your search, click "Advanced Search" under the magnifying glass in the search bar. This will give you more options to choose from such as the format, language, date published, and more.

BingePasses

Since users are only able to sign out two titles per month, hoopla added BingePasses to their titles list. If you sign out one of the BingePass items, it will have a collection of streaming content that only counts as one sign out. 

Browsing Content

Under each content option (ebook, audiobook, comics, etc.), you will see different curated lists like popular titles, featured, genres and collections, trending, recommended, new, leaving soon, staff picks, and more. 

Signing Out Content

To sign out content, click on a title you are interested in and click "borrow". With hoopla, there are no wait times and any title can be signed out by any number of people. 

Listening to an Audiobook

Accessing your title is similar for any type of content, but we'll use an audiobook for example. The biggest difference is when you are reading an ereader that does not allow you to download the hoopla app. If that is the case, please contact your Learning Commons Facilitator and they can help you.

This screen will appear right after you select "borrow" but you can also get there through the top bar where it says "My hoopla" then select "Currently Borrowed" from the dropdown. From this page, you will be able to access the title, see a description of the book, as well as read reviews. You can also click the heart icon to add the title to your favourites list.

Audiobook Player

After clicking "Play" in the previous screen, the web version of hoopla will open this title at the bottom of your screen. Click the arrow on the bottom left to access the options.

Sleep Timer

If you find it easier to go to sleep listening to an audiobook but you don't want to lose your place, you can set a sleep timer that will stop the book after your chosen length of time.

Table of Contents

Clicking on any chapter will bring you directly to that spot in the book.

Playback Speed

Narrator speaking too fast or too slow for you? You can change the speed at which it's read for your comfort.

My hoopla

Clicking "My hoopla" in the top bar will take you to a page of curated lists, many created specifically for you based on your previously signed out books, favourite items, or your recommendation settings.

Currently Borrowed

Under the "My hoopla" tab in the top bar, select "Currently Borrowed". This will let you see any items you have out. Clicking on a title you have signed out will let you access the content. If you don't have anything signed out, you can browse through the collection by click on any of the content buttons shown on the screen.

Favourites List

Any title you have clicked the heart icon for will show up on this list. You can use this list to show titles you really loved or you can treat it as a wish list for any titles you would like to borrow in the future. You can access this list under the "My hoopla" tab.

Reading History

Available in the "My hoopla" tab, you can view any title you have previously signed out. 

Settings

If you would like hoopla to recommend books that would best interest you, select the gear icon in the top right bar. Once directed to the settings page, select "Recommendations". Click on as many genres as you would like to add them to your recommendation settings.

Additionally in your settings, you have the opportunity to change your password or email, and view email notification options.
