6. All singers are expected to adhere to the OSAA policy in regards to being enrolled in and passing 5 classes for both first and second semester in order to participate in the district and state choir competitions, as well as solo/ensemble competitions.

PERFORMANCE APPAREL:

A choir is as good as how it looks as well as how it sounds! At Summit, we make a great effort to make sure our singers present themselves as professionally as possible and are uniform in appearance. Uniform items will be ordered by Mrs. Jacot unless otherwise noted. Please read the following rules for your ensemble(s), and note the general information listed below.

Concert Choir:

Uniforms will be voted on by students, from a list of options provided by Mrs. Jacot the first week of school.

Summit Chorale: Singers will wear the SHS choir robe with collar. Under the robes, please note:

Women: Black closed-toe shoes, with a dress or skirt that does not hang below the hem of the robe. The dress or blouse should not show above the collar of the robe. Nylon stockings or tan colored stockings (or no stockings) should be worn.

Men: Black slacks, black socks and a dress shirt (either black or white) with a necktie (either black or white – no patterns). No bow-ties, please.

Skyliner Jazz:

Each student will purchase a black jacket with the Skyliner logo and their name embroidered on the front. Also, each student will purchase a Skyliner T-shirt, with the back design to be discussed and voted on in class.

The formal uniform for Skyliner Jazz is as follows:

Women: A black, at the knee, dress to be ordered, approx. $180.00. In addition, women will purchase black elbow-length gloves (Jacot will order) as well as a black patent leather classic pump with 2-3 inch heels.

Men: Black slacks, black long-sleeved dress shirt and black socks. If you need help obtaining these, please let Mrs. Jacot know. Jacot will order a black fedora, black/white spectator shoes, white suspenders, white necktie and white bow tie.

General Performance Information for all choirs:

Jewelry: Nothing except stud earrings. No hoops or nose/lip rings.

Hair: Should be worn away from the face. No bangs hanging over the eyes. Please make sure that hair ornaments are brown or black and only wear them if totally necessary.

Hygiene: The most important part of your performance attire is definitely your deodorant. A choir only works when all members can breathe without fear!

GUIDELINES ON THE USE OF RELIGIOUS MUSIC

A total music experience for the students enrolled in choir at Summit High School may include both religious and secular (non-religious) music. From a global perspective, music offers a wealth of literature that reflects and supports a diversity of cultures, traditions, and peoples, as well as compositional styles of all eras. To achieve any educational objective, the quality and diversity of the repertoire (songs performed) is of utmost importance.

The choral program at Summit High School will not promote or degrade any religious belief. Instead, the choir will encourage all students and staff members to appreciate and respect each other’s religious views. The choir shall utilize any opportunity to foster understanding and mutual respect among students and parents, whether it involves race, culture, ethnicity, economic background, or religious belief. In that spirit of respect, a student may be excused from participating in practices that are contrary to their religious beliefs.

The selection of quality music will invariably include music with a religious text. To exclude religious music from the public school curriculum would be like studying world history minus the country of France, architecture minus the cathedral, or painting without religious themes. It is incomplete from an academic point of view.

I see my responsibility as the following:

  • Select repertoire based on musical and educational value. Repertoire may include the performance of religious music, and the teaching of such repertoire will neither promote nor inhibit religious views.
  • Explain historical, cultural and musical context of selections being performed, as appropriate.
  • Foster a climate in which each student can learn and appreciate a variety of culture and heritage.
  • Observe all policies, mission statements and student goals of the Bend/LaPine School District.
  • Show a diversity of repertoire throughout the school year that includes a variety of styles and historical periods of music.
