How Media Influences People
I am curious, what is this about?
Why am I interested in this?
Does it teach me anything important? Is it helpful?
Does it teach me about my culture or other cultures?
Why is this on my TikTok or Snap stories?
Questions to ask about who is presenting messages/information to you are:
Is this person an authority or expert on this topic? If so, why?
Is this information/message relevant to me?
Is this important for me to know?
Can it benefit me or harm me?
Discussion
What do you think this is about?
Determine if you understand the situation/activity/message is about (context)
Look for signs, symbols, clues in the background or look at what is being performed/acted out. AND
Listen for slang & words that have been redefined or used different from the true meaning
Also ask:
“What position has the person taken?”
“What are they encouraging others to do, believe, or agree with?”
“What are they supporting?”
To evaluate a message ask:
Is the message or activity logical?- i.e. is it possible? Can it really happen? Does it make sense?
Is the message or behavior safe and legal or harmful and dangerous?
Is there proof of what the message or information says?
Does the behavior fit your culture & family’s expectations for you?
If I do this, what risk am I taking? What benefit might I earn from this?
What's your position? i.e Are your for or against?
What's your reason and evidence for taking your position?
i.e. why are you for or against? What evidence supports your why
What are the counter arguments to your position?
i.e. why do people agree or disagree with your position?
What effects might you position have on others/ the future?
