Setting: railway compartment, Vermissa valley 1875.
McMurdo is travelling to Vermissa valley by train. He seats down in a compartment and takes out a newspaper. Then he checks if his revolver is loaded and puts it back. Scanlan and Cormac see this. They ask him if he is armed and his whereabouts. McMurdo explains that he is from Chicago and a member of the ancient orders of freemen. Scanlan says the sign, “dark nights are unpleasant”, and McMurdo shakes his hand and completes the countersign “for strangers to travel”. They introduce themselves to each other. Scanlan and Cormac ask him to visit McGinty who is the body master and everything happens in Vermissa valley based upon his order. Scanlan and Cormac get off at their destined stop. Police officers approach McMurdo; he doesn’t talk to them positively. Police officers warn him to be careful while choosing friends in Vermissa valley.
Setting: Shafter’s lodging 1875.
Ted Baldwin who is a Scowrer is trying to convince Ettie to go out with him. Ettie is making excuses but promises to meet on Friday as she is threatened because Baldwin is a Scowrer. Shafter doesn’t like Baldwins presence around his daughter and in his lodge. McMurdo arrives at Shafter’s, he has a booked lodge. He finds Ettie adorable.
Setting: Baker Street 1895.
Holmes is an investigator. He is reading a ciphered message stating 534...C2…13. He is suspecting Professor Moriarty is up to something and is stating that he is the controlling power of the underworld. He is the schemer of all time and a mind behind devilry. Watson calls him a Napoleon of Crime. He is such a clever mind that he never leaves any proof against him. He is the controlling man of a chain of people including fighting men, pickpockets, blackmailers and criminals. They tend to decode the ciphered message sent by Fred Porlock (Holmes correspondent) one of Professor Moriarty men. Fred Porlock requests Holmes to burn the message as he thinks Professor Moriarty suspects him of being a traitor (which he is). They tend to guess the book. Their first guess is “Bible” but the idea gets rejected as bible’s each edition has different pages. Second guess is Bradshaw which is a railway timetable. This idea also gets rejected as the vocabulary is limited so a general message cannot be sent via it. Finally, Whitakers Almanac is chosen. They are able to decipher the message “there is danger may come to Douglas at Birlstone Manor Birlstone pressing”. At the same time, MacDonald enters, he sees the note and tells them that Mr. Douglas was murdered this morning.
Setting: union house salon 1875 the bar.
McGinty and his fellow Scowrers’ are reading news written by James Stranger. This news unfolds the truth about the existence of criminal organization. McGinty wants to teach a hard lesson to James for unveiling the truth of Scowrer’s existence. Meanwhile Scanlan approaches and informs McGinty about his meeting with McMurdo.
Setting: Birlstone Manor 1895 the study.
A body is lying on the floor and Doctor Wood and Sergeant Wilson are inspecting the body, when Mason a detective informs Sergeant Wilson that Mac Donald should be on his way with Holmes. Doctor Wood discovers a triangle on Mr. Douglas’s arm but concludes with that it might be a rum thing. Mason questions Ames and Barker. The main question left is how any murder could escape unseen.
Setting: A railway Compartment 1895.
Holmes, Watson and McDonald are sitting down and are discussing the information they have about Mr. Douglas. Holmes tells about Porlock's message, and they start suspecting Professor Moriarty. MacDonald also suspects Barker as the information sent by Mason states that Mr. Douglas disliked Mrs. Douglas' and Barker's friendship. Holmes has a feeling that there is a chain between Mrs. Douglas and Professor Moriarty.
Setting: Shafter's Lodging. 1875. The kitchen.
McMurdo is being asked to leave Shafter's Lodging by Mr. Shafter because he gets to know that McMurdo is one of the ancient orders of freemen. He tells him that he is innocent but Shafter doesn’t believe a word he says. McMurdo expresses his feelings for Ettie. Baldwin arrives for his promised walk but when he sees McMurdo, he starts arguing. Ted shows McMurdo a brand on his arm and tells him that he will soon know what it means. He leaves by telling Ettie, that she would come back to him.
Setting: Birlstone Manor 1895. The study.
Sergeant Wilson, Mason, Barker and Ames are investigating, they find clues like boot marks, a card written V.V...341 on it and a hammer. Ames also informs that the drawbridge was raised at 6’O Clock last night and he wound it up himself. One theory was that the murderer crossed the moat at 6’O clock and killed Mr. Douglas at 11:00 at night when he was checking if the windows were locked or not.
Setting: Union house saloon. The bar. 1875.
McMurdo meets McGinty as he was advised. McGinty asks him about where he is coming from and why? McMurdo tells him he shot Jonas Pinto as he thought he was going to betray him. Baldwin enters and puts forward his problem with McMurdo. The councilor decides that Ettie is free to choose for herself. A guy named Marvin enters and claims to be captain of coal and iron police. He had specially come to inspect the group. He warns them not to cause problem. Marvin also asks McGinty to help in upholding the law and order but he says that he has his own police.
Setting: Birlstone Manor 1895. The study.
Mac Donald, Mason, Sergeant Wilson, Doctor Wood, Holmes, Watson and Ames are continuing the investigation. They confirm that the gun is an American gun made by Pennsylvania Small Arms Company. Everybody puts forward their theory. The question still remains if the murder was someone from the outside or the inside. Holmes concludes that the brand on Douglas’s arm and the card found next to the body seems to belong to a secret society. Mr. Barker informs he found a bicycle probably belonging to the murder.
Setting: Union house saloon. 1875. The bar.
McMurdo was tested to become a Scowrer, he succeeds with flying colors and was welcomed in the lodge by the Councilor McGinty. All the Scowrers’ attended a meeting where they discussed about the murders that had to take place. Then all of them discuss about a job that was to be done, to kill Andrew Rae, Josiah Dunn and Journalist James Stanger. Morris goes against the idea to kill James Stranger but gets scolded by McGinty and then is ordered to obey him, he apologizes. To beat up James Stranger the Willaby brothers, Scanlan, Baldwin, and McMurdo are chosen.
Setting: Outside the offices of Vermissa Herald. 1875.
McMurdo, Scanlan, Art and Frank Willaby, and Baldwin enter the offices of Vermissa Herald. Baldwin starts to beat James Stanger until his face got bloodied. McMurdo tells Baldwin to stop beating him or else he would die, but he then threatened to beat McMurdo with the stick. After some while all five of them exit.
Setting: A Street. 1875.
Ettie and McMurdo have a little conversation and then Ettie leaves. Then, Morris Approaches him and tells him his emotional story about how he joined the Scowrers’ and how he witnessed a murder of a 5-year-old boy’s father (The boy was Thomas Larbey) his father was murdered in front of him. Morris also states that he doesn’t wants to be the part of the lodge.
Setting: Birlstone Manor. 1895. The study.
Ames, Barker, Mrs. Allen, and Mrs. Douglas inform Holmes and Mac Donald about all they knew before the murder took place. There was a lot of information gathered with Holmes and Inspector McDonald like; Barker was a good friend of Douglas, Douglas had some kind of fear off the valley of fear and McGinty, and Mrs. Allen heard the door slamming at around half an hour before the murder took place. She could not hear the gunshot because she has some problem in hearing. Ames told that before the murder (yesterday), Mr. Douglas went to shopping to Tunbridge Wells. Barker also added that he didn’t know Mrs. Douglas before her and Douglas’s marriage. Douglas was jealous of his and Mrs. Douglas’ friendship.
Setting: Widow Namara’s parlor. 1875.
McGinty and McMurdo are having a serious conversation, McGinty asks McMurdo that what was brother Morris speaking to him about? McMurdo said that he asked him for a clerkship in his store. McGinty said that Morris is a disloyal brother. Then, they plan to kill Chester Wilcox, as they finish off their conversation Inspector Marvin comes and arrests McMurdo.
Setting: The courtroom. 1895.
The magistrate denied the proof of the moustache as it was of low-level. He was convinced that the accused are innocent and he discharged them and also apologized if this caused them any inconvenience. Mrs. Larbey gets agitated by the fact that the Scowrers’ were let off. Magistrate asks one of his officers to escort Mrs. Larbey from the court.
Setting: Birlstone Manor. 1895. The Garden.
Dr. Watson witnesses Mrs. Douglas and Mr. Barker sitting under a tree on a bench, laughing and giggling like nothing worse has happened to them recently.
Setting: Birlstone Manor. 1895.The Study.
Holmes and Watson are discussing about some clues. They also discover some new ones, like: Barker’s slipper stained with blood; he also stated that barker marked the window himself and all he stated was a lie. The ring was taken after the murder was committed. Holmes and Watson discuss the possibility of Mrs. Douglas and Mr. Barker being the murderers. The bicycle belongs to an American + Holmes stated that the murder was committed half an hour before they were informed. Mrs. Douglas and Barker arrived at the study before the murderer escaped and helped him in escaping.
Setting: Widow Namara’s. The parlor. 1875.
McMurdo is writing a secret letter, Ettie enters and asks whom is the letter to. He doesn’t tell her what it is about and who it is too as it is concerning the lodge. Ettie asks him to leave the valley of fear and the Scowrers’. She also tells him that Chester Wilcox’s house was burnt into ash by the Scowrers’ but he fled away before any harm came to him or his family. Andrew and Lawler are visiting the ‘Valley of Fear’ to take care of a job that was assigned to them. They visit Widow Namara’s parlor.
Setting: Crow Hill mine. 1875.
Lawler and Andrew shoot Josiah Dunn as soon as he starts suspecting them in the crowd of miners. Menzies is also shot. McMurdo and Scanlan clearly witness the whole scene and are impressed.
Setting: The Westville arms. 1895. The dining room.
Watson and Holmes are having breakfast, MacDonald and Mason join them. Holmes says that their case is a wastage of time (following the cyclist). He also advises them to abandon it. Upon asking Holmes tells them that he learned the history of Birlstone Manor. He explains that there is a secret cellar for concealment. King Charles 2 concealed there during a war. Then he requests MacDonlad to write a letter to Mr. Barker teling him that they will be draining moat in hope for clues. This is the first step of Holmes’ plan…!!
Setting: Union house saloon. 1875. The bar.
Morris tells McMurdo about a Pinkerton’s man working in Vermissa Valley, Birdy Edwards. Morris also shows him the telegram he got from his friend who is working in the telegram office, who deciphered the message. Morris didn’t want to be a part of this so he asked McMurdo to tell McGinty about it. McMurdo tells the news to McGinty and they plan to kill Birdy Edwards.
Birlstone Manor. 1895. The study.
Holmes shows Barker, Mason, Watson and Mrs. Douglas the boots, American styled clothes, knife, pants and an overcoat he found in the moat. Holmes states that he replaced the bundle and sent a letter to Mr. Barker about draining the Moat so the person behind it could be found during the action of retrieving the bundle.
Setting: Widow Namara’s. 1875. The bar.
McMurdo, McGinty and other Scowrers’ are waiting for Birdy Edwards, but, then, McMurdo reveals that he himself is Birdy Edwards and that they have fallen into his trap. Captain Marvin arrests the Scowrers’ present on the spot. Baldwin and McGinty warn him that they will take revenge.
Setting: Birlstone Manor. 1895. The study.
Mr. Douglas is alive; Holmes got to know about it when he spent a day in the study of Birlstone Manor, Mr. Douglas explained that the dead man was actually Ted Baldwin. Douglas mentions that he wrote a recount about the last 20 years of his life. He also states that, he knew Ted Baldwin would come for revenge he killed him during self-defense, so the authorities have no right to arrest him.
Setting: 221b Baker Street. 1895. Sitting room.
Holmes and Watson are discussing about the notes Mr. John Douglas had made. Watson states that the mystery is over but in Holmes opinion the mystery is not over yet. Barker enters and tells that Douglas lost his life. Holmes states it’s a murder not a co-incidence. The murderer is not from America but from London. They suspect Professor Moriarty.
