Each level mercifully starts with an overview of the game's branching paths, so little guesswork is required as to when and where the player must put in a particularly strong, three-star effort. At the same time, this straightforward map is symbolic of just how little of the game surprises. Because star ratings are assessed based on completion time and damage dealt, gameplay boils down to avoiding a seemingly random assortment of foes using painted platforms, rushing to the end, and fighting either a bizarrely animated pagoda or demonic boss using a summon. Enemies, environments, and bosses are recycled ad nauseum, so no strategy is needed other than memorizing the quickest way to lay down paint lines without getting hit by projectiles.

Developed by Japanese studio Acquire, Sumioni: Demon Arts follows a righteous demon working to save the world. Sumioni uses the Vita functionality to create a unique platforming experience in which players can draw platforms on the screen to run across and summon elemental powers with a brush of the fingertip.

Sumioni: Demon Arts takes place in an alternate version of ancient Japan. People with the ability to control special magic in this universe go by the title ink master. Long ago, an evil Ink master summoned a terrible Ink demon that devastated the world, forcing it into a dark age. Now the powers of good struggle to reclaim control.

In Sumioni, players take control of a righteous ink demon and fight the darkness of the world. Each stage takes place on a side-scrolling background with obstacles and enemies standing between the player and the end goal.

Controlling the Ink demon works like any other action platformer. Move around on screen, slash baddies with the demon's weapon, and keep on moving. The special powers, however, make Sumioni more unique than the average "run-and-jump" game. Drawing a line on screen paints an ink streak across the level which can then function as a platform. Alternatively, hit the L trigger and freeze time. In this state, drawing on screen causes fire to erupt across the ink the moment time resumes its flow.

The opening text scroll of Sumioni explains it is the story of Tengen, an inkmaster driven out of the capital by Fukujou and Seimei. When the latter is betrayed and transformed into a powerful demon, Tengen becomes a spirit inhabiting Agura, the demon playable character.

The story of Sumioni: Demon Arts is that of an ink-god named Agura, he has been summoned by the inkmaster Tengan to help restore peace to ancient Japan. The thing is, Agura is a very lazy demon, and when he is first summoned all he wants to do is sleep. Agura and the other characters all have their little quirks that make them enjoyable, but because the story is told sparingly throughout the game's 30 stages one never gets a real reason to be attached to them.

The game isn't just combat though, as Agura has the ability to use ink to his advantage. The lovable ink demon can paint platforms into existence (controlled by sliding one's finger across the touch screen) to better maneuver around the environment. Agura can also use the ink to create thunder clouds or light enemies ablaze. Lastly, players are also able to summon gods into existence, whose powers come in handy during the boss fights.

This quirk aside, the touch-screen controls are perfect. We had no problems summoning platforms on the fly by drawing a straight line on the screen, be it to help our demon reach higher parts of the stage or to push spiked wheel traps away from our path. We could also clear out unneeded sumi ink platforms by tapping the water icon on the bottom right of the touch screen.

Activating the bottom left icon and performing the requisite gesture will summon a four-legged beast companion called Shidou, who follows your every move and lunges at anything in its path. Shidou also erupts into a blue laser beam before exiting stage left, so you have to find the perfect opportunity to unleash it and its bird counterpart. We suggest you do this for the end-of-level boss fights against the towering contraptions and demonic folklore beasts, since you can use them only once per stage.

Players must plan out their strategy in Sumioni to achieve the highest score possible. This includes simple actions, such as the best area to place a brushstroke, to more complex concepts, like what type of attack to use on what enemy. Since the ink used to create brushstrokes is a finite resource, players must carefully strategize their actions and anticipate how much ink they will need for a particular fight or move. If players fail to wisely budget their use of ink, they may be unable to call their powers into action during the most crucial parts of the game.

What you really need is some touchscreen action. Drawing on the screen will cause ink to appear, and your demon samurai can walk on any platforms that you create, allowing you to walk over obstacles and attack enemies from above.

The title "Sumioni" means "Ink Demon", and also indicates the protagonist of the game, summoned to fight against the evil forces that threaten feudal Japan. The demon is controlled via traditional inputs, but the touch controls of the Vita allow the player to "paint" brush strokes on the screen. 2351a5e196
