Electron Microscopy and Microstructural Dynamics

Course Credit Structure (3:0:0) for PG and UG Students (Elective)

Course objectives:

This Course will introduce the fundamental and case study type framework of the importance of microstructural attributes in materials design for various large scale applications. Basic thermo-dynamical and phase-transformation related understanding of evolution of microstructure during different processing environment will be discussed. Fine tuning and engineering of microstructure of materials and its direct effect in the bulk applications level will be introduced. The key principles of techniques used in the microstructural characterization by X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy and the emphasis on detailed analysis of defects responsible for materials properties will be presented. The hands on experience for image and failure analysis by cutting edge image processing and crystallographic software will be taught in this course. Broad number of students from Materials, Mechanical, Electrical, Physics and Civil Engineering discipline will be equipped with the key knowledge of microstructural dynamics and its importance before designing bulk system in their respective field of applications. Knowledge of role of processing and manufacturing in designing the desired microstructure for customized materials applications is the key essence of this course.

Course Content:

Physical Realization of Microstructure through Analytical Microscopy, Case studies and practice tasks for analytic evaluation of structure and microstructure; Thermodynamic Formalism of Microstructure Evolution, Case Studies and Crystallographic Information Analysis Techniques, Diffusion Mechanism, Crystal Interfaces and Microstructural Dynamics, Microstructural Control and Processing of Materials.

Course outcomes:

Students who complete the course will have demonstrated the ability to do the following:

• Basic and key understanding of the importance of microstructure in various bulk level materials properties.

• Understanding of the thermodynamic and kinematical reasoning of microstructural evolution.

• Provide the knowledge of role of processing and manufacturing in designing the desired microstructure for customized materials applications.

• Provide basic descriptions of a range of common characterizations techniques for determination of microstructural attributes and composition of materials.

• Provide hands on training in micro-structural data and failure analysis through different cutting edge image processing and crystallographic software.

• Will be equipped for proper design and selection of materials for different engineering application purposes by applying the in detailed knowledge of the thermodynamics and kinetics.

• Case studies on micro-structural effect in various bulk level materials properties in different engineering applications.
