Moorish history in the Americas is both a cultural legacy and a testament to enduring civilization. Ancient Moabite tradition affirms that the Asiatic peoples have inhabited North, Central, and South America, along with the adjoining islands, since time immemorial—long before the great cataclysm that gave rise to the Atlantic Ocean. Supported by linguistic and archaeological studies, this tradition finds resonance in evidence of Moorish language, architecture, and cultural continuity across thousands of years. Together, these truths underscore not only the depth of our presence in the Americas but also the rightful place of Moorish civilization in the broader story of human history.
The House of Simmons Bey, established in January 2018, formally restored the Sultanate of Amexem in August 2020 under the authority and guidance of Allah, with a mandate to safeguard Moorish customs and heritage. As a dynasty within the Moorish Divine and National Movement of Asiatic Nations of North America, we embody both spiritual and temporal sovereignty. The Sultanate stands as an international union of Moorish and Asiatic peoples, vested with the inherent right to self-governance and empowered to engage with other tribes and nations on a government-to-government basis.
The Divine Constitution and By-Laws, established by Noble Drew Ali in 1913 and adopted under the name and style of the “Sultanate of Amexem,” were formally reaffirmed and approved by the House of Simmons Bey in 2020 to serve as the foundation of the modern Moorish government. These sacred laws provide the structural framework for a theocratic, self-governing entity and stand as the recognized national standard for Moorish governance and sovereignty.
We meet every Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Central to run elections, welcome new members, direct our economic efforts, and handle national business. Our Ministry of Business led by the Grand Sheik and Chairman with five executive Sheiks entrusted with the Sultanate’s executive, legislative, and judicial affairs year-round.
The Self-Governance Act of 1988, first established as a demonstration project within the Bureau of Indian Affairs, affirmed what our Moorish predecessors had already embraced as early as 1913 the sacred duty and inherent right of self-rule. Amended in 1991 to expand authority into the Indian Health Service, the Act underscored a truth made clear after more than 150 years of federal mismanagement: nations govern themselves best, free from external interference.
The Sultanate of Amexem formally adopts this principle as both law and legacy. Rooted in the Divine Constitution and By-Laws and sustained by the House of Simmons Bey, we recognize self-governance as the foundation of our sovereignty, the safeguard of our heritage, and the pathway to prosperity for our people. This principle is not merely policy it is the divine and national standard by which we stand among the nations of the earth.
Our Ministry serves the Nation through four vital pillars: Administration, Economic Resources, Community Services, and Health and Social Services. Alongside these, we have established enterprises such as Bey Group International, United Royal Clothier Association, Moorish Economic Forum, Most Flavored Herbs & Seasoning, and Easir Naqi each designed to drive prosperity and empower our people. We acknowledge that it may take generations to overcome the challenges created by outside agencies once relied upon. Yet we look to the future with resolve: strengthening our heritage, expanding our economy, and unlocking the full potential of our Nation for centuries to come.
The Sultanate of Amexem is actively engaged in securing formal acknowledgment of its inherent rights by the United States of America and the several States of the Union, with the support of community allies and partners across Illinois and beyond. Our people live and labor throughout North America—building businesses, casting votes, protecting rivers and watersheds, and advancing scholarship in schools, colleges, and universities. We now call directly upon the Congress of the United States of America and upon the Nations of the Earth to recognize the inherent rights of the Sultanate of Amexem, thereby safeguarding the ancestral identity, traditions, and cultural heritage of Moorish Americans for generations to come.
