Minding Your Mind- Connection between mental health & substance use - POC:
Sheila Gillin
-Stress: family,friends, school
-It's important to manage stress because we have a hormone in our brain and when we are stressed our body becomes more vulnerable.
-Depression: Loss of energy, aches and pains,changes in appetite, feeling like the whole world in on your shoulders,
-Emotional symptoms: sadness,anger, wanting to be alone, losing interest in your hobbies, not wanting to go to school and hangout with friends
-Anxiety: Shaking, racing heart, sleeping difficulties, stomach issues, dizziness, sweating
-Emotion systems: fears, worrying, negative thinking, self-criticism
-Part of the brain: Amygdala, responsible for the limbic system (emotions), signals for stress
-Pre-frontal cortex: Not fully developed until your 19-25, substance abuse/emotional.
-Negative coping skills (easy to access, helps escape stress): provides relief= self harm, drugs, alcohol
-Substance use makes changes to our brains
-Many people use substance as a negative coping skill
-Parents feel powerlessness when living with a kid with substance use
-Financial difficulties because a family member tries to find a way to support their addiction
-Siblings on that substance user might feel anger/fear
-Substance use can affect a community because there are higher health care costs, increases in crime rates, schools=declining grades, employment=decreases in workplace, not showing up for work.
-Social media during Covid was helpful because we could communicate with our friends
Talking about fentanyl
What happens when we put a drug through a pathway?
The drug hijacks natural reward
Dopamine=thinking, decision-making,judgment
Dopamine makes changes in the brain and increases your mood but soon the drug leaves your body and your mood decreases
When you do the drug a lot you don't get as high as the first time
You will feel worse then the first time
“Spiraling cycle” when you use the drug
Your brain is done developing at 25
You lose motivation because the brain isn't rewarding the domaine
When you have trauma the fear pathway may become overactive and the reward pathway might become underactive
Fentanyl in San Diego:
2012=12
2013=14
2014=15
2016=33
2017=84
2018=92
2019=151
2020=457
2021=800+
2017 fentanyl deaths become more current because it's being transported through the border.
Opioid is from plants
They but opioids in chemistry laps and made it stronger
Strongest medications: Morphine,hydrocodone,oxycodone
⅘ new heroin abusers started with prescription opioids
When you break a bone it goes to the brain while it goes to the brain it goes through receptors
When you take an opioid you get fewer pain signals
When you take so many opioids it blocks the brain from telling the body to breathe.
Fake pulls that look like they are from a pharmacy but they are really filled with FENTANYL a deathly opioid
As little as 2 mg of Fentanyl can kill you
Fentanyl is made in fake labs in South America and Mexico
Fentanyl is cheaper and easier to make
Narcan only worlds on opiods
Nasal spray, you push on the plunger
When you see someone overdosing,drunk, you use the nasal spray
It can only help and not harm
How to know if someone is overdosing
There face starts to turn bluish
Snoring sound
It's going to go to the brain and push the opioid off
You still need to call 911 because it won't last forever
Substances:
Alcohol: ethanol is intoxicating
ABV= acolhol by volume
The amount of alcohol consumed that affects a person most not the type of alcohol
Underage people drinking are most likely to binge drink
Alcohol overdose occurs when there is a lot of alcohol in the bloodstream that areas of the brain controlling basic life support functions shut down
Symptoms: mental confusion, difficulty remaining conscious, vomiting, hard time breathing, dulled responses such as no gag reflexes (prevents choking), low body temperature, slow heart rate, clammy-like skin, and seizures.
Cannabis:
Is dried flowers or leaves from the cannabis plant and contains mind-altering compounds like TCH (Tetrahydrocannabinol)
Is legal in all states for anyone under the age of 21 to use cannabis recreationally

Drugs imitate the brain's natural chemical messengers which cues damage to neurological connections
Overstimulating the reward circuit of the brain, leading to reduced ability to feel pleasure
Impacts proper function and growth, as a brain reaches its fully developed stage at 25
Using drugs causes mental health issues
ALL types of drugs are ADDICTIVE
Different types of drugs
