Our Planet, Our Responsibility

Located in Suffield CT, The Suffield Sustainability Council (SSC) was founded in 2019 to make our school, town and planet a more sustainable and environmentally friendly place. We are a student led organization that is dedicated to fighting climate change and promoting sustainable practices throughout our region.

Up and Coming News!

SSC headed to Hartford

In conjunction with CT Sierra, the Suffield Sustainability Council was invited to Hartford on February 2nd to take part in a walk to raise awareness of the growing threat of climate change and to hear from various speakers along the way! Starting at the Old State House and ending at the Connecticut State Capitol (with a few stops in between), one of our members was even interviewed by the Hartford Courant; click on a picture to get a PDF link to the article! The SSC was able to raise awareness about climate change and learn how to make our voices heard during the legislative process.

Composting!

In conjunction with the town of Suffield, USA Recycling, and Spaulding Elementary School, SSC rolled out composting at A Ward Elementary School in Suffield. It was a smashing success! SSC members trained each grade using a series of age appropriate lessons that were received with great enthusiasm! An article on this event will be forthcoming in the Observer.

Since the elementary students have been doing so well (1,200 lbs -1,400 lbs in a month), we have been planning a elementary vs high school competition to help motivate our high school students "learn how to do it better."

SSC is also now moving their focus to McAlister Intermediate School and will begin rolling out composting there before summer.

Past events (2023-24)

Youth Climate Summit:

On November 6th SSC attended an amazing conference organized by Mass Audubon at the Springfield Museum completely organized by and for youth involved in the climate crisis. It was attended by over 125 students from Western MA, CT, RI, NH. SSC students learned to refine and redefine their roles as youth climate leaders, shared time networking with peers from other towns, attended sessions hosted by No Loose Braids/ Ohketeau Center on traditional land stewardship, Springfield Climate Justice Coalition, Undaunted K12- Climate Resilient Schools Resolutions, Mass Audubon Advocacy- Civic Engagement and the Healthy Air Network. No Loose Braids lead a traditional dance outside the event, and our group came up with a Climate Action Plan for our town focusing on creating an educational plan for decreasing the amount of single use plastic used by local businesses. It was an energizing, informative, and really fun day.
