Looking back, it seems our family has always had a penchant for fashion and a deep appreciation for a good deal. But beyond the thrill of the hunt, there's always been a strong current of sustainability flowing through our veins. This inherent respect for resources and a desire to minimize our environmental impact undoubtedly fueled the birth of Suessie's Resale UBNA in 2021.
The seed for this venture was sown long ago, nurtured by the remarkable women in our family. Decades before we even dreamt of opening our own boutique, my daughter, Hailey, spent countless hours as a toddler with her grandmother, Martha Miller, and her great-grandmother, Betty Temmen. These two extraordinary women were the driving force behind "Used but Not Abused," a beloved resale consignment boutique in Pana, Illinois. Witnessing their entrepreneurial spirit firsthand, observing their dedication to providing quality, pre-loved items to their community, and experiencing the joy of discovering hidden treasures within their shop, undoubtedly shaped Hailey's understanding of the value of reuse and the power of supporting local businesses.
Fast forward to the tumultuous year of 2020. The world was grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic, and our lives, like so many others, were thrown into disarray. Confined to our homes, we found ourselves with an abundance of clothing and nowhere to go. A spark of inspiration ignited – "Let's sell these online!" And so began our foray into the world of online reselling.
Soon, we found ourselves inundated with requests from family and friends eager for assistance in selling their own pre-loved treasures. This demand solidified our decision to transform this passion project into a fully-fledged business. In August 2021, Suessie's Resale officially opened its doors at 216 S. Main St in Taylorville, IL bringing the dream of a family-run consignment boutique to life.
However, our vision extended beyond simply reselling clothing. We felt a strong desire to create a unique shopping experience, a vibrant hub that celebrated local talent and fostered community connections. Thus, we incorporated a "Market Place of Specialized Products," showcasing the handcrafted creations and unique offerings of local artisans and vendors.
Today, as we reflect on our journey, we are filled with gratitude for the generations of women who paved the way for Suessie's Resale UBNA. Their entrepreneurial spirit, their commitment to sustainability, and their dedication to community have become the cornerstones of our own legacy.
Consignment boutiques offer a unique and exciting way to engage in sustainable shopping, while also indulging in the thrill of uncovering hidden treasures that can’t be found in traditional big-box stores. While consignment shops have been around for decades, they've seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years. This shift can be largely attributed to the growing awareness of environmental concerns, the increasing desire for distinctive and vintage pieces, and a more widespread interest in affordable fashion.
Consignment stores provide shoppers with the opportunity to enjoy high-quality, pre-loved items that often carry a unique character, while also minimizing waste and over-consumption. If you’re in search of fashionable finds that prioritize sustainability and style, look no further than Suessie's! You’ll find both timeless classics and trendy pieces, all while making an eco-conscious choice for your wardrobe.
Our shop is proud to support our community in a variety of ways. Through our consignment program, we help local families by reselling their gently used items, and we support small businesses by offering a space for them to showcase
and sell their merchandise.
Beyond that, we are committed to giving back. We regularly partner with organizations like Young Dance Inc. where we host special events, such as a day of social dancing where proceeds benefit the local food pantry and other nonprofit organizations.
We also joined the Taylorville Chapter of IFBW (originally formed in 1929). Once known as Business & Professional Women (BPW), this chapter provides local scholarships, microloans & shoes to children through funds from their
Annual Spring Fashion Show.
We believe in the power of community and are always looking for new opportunities to make a positive impact.
