Biography of Sudeep Singh - Former Executive Director of the food Corporation of India

Sudeep Singh is a distinguished strategic public-sector leader and former senior civil servant who served the Government of India for 26 years. He retired as the Executive Director of the Food Corporation of India (FCI), a position equivalent in rank to a Joint Secretary to the Government of India. With over 30 years of professional experience, Singh is recognized for his expertise in national food security, supply chain management, and institutional governance.

Early Life and Education

Sudeep Singh holds a diverse academic background that combines scientific and management disciplines. He earned a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Microbiology and subsequently completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a specialization in Marketing and Finance. He is multilingual, speaking English, Hindi, and Punjabi.

Professional Career

Early Career (1992–1999)

Before joining the central government service, Singh spent seven years at the Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) as a Manager. During this period, he contributed to renewable energy development, rural electrification initiatives, and various sustainability-focused projects.

Food Corporation of India (1999–2025)

Singh joined the Food Corporation of India (FCI) in 1999, where he held various diverse positions over a 26-year tenure. As Executive Director, he led critical national functions under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), overseeing the procurement, storage, transportation, and distribution of food grains across India.

His leadership was characterized by managing operations of unprecedented scale, including:

• Procurement and Logistics: He directed annual procurement valued at Rs 2 trillion (Rs 2 lakh crore) and ensured fair Minimum Support Price (MSP) access for over 15 million farmers annually.

• Asset Management: He oversaw a storage capacity of 3540 million tonnes and was responsible for national food grain stocks valued at nearly Rs 10 trillion (Rs 10 lakh crore).

• Workforce Leadership: He managed a geographically diverse workforce of 25,000 personnel, supported by an additional labor strength of 80,000.

Crisis Management and Governance

A notable highlight of his career was his role during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he exercised high-pressure operational command to ensure an uninterrupted national food supply during the crisis. In terms of institutional governance, Singh served as the Secretary to the Board of Directors at FCI, where he was instrumental in strengthening transparency, compliance, and strategic decision-making processes. He also provided vital policy support at a Joint Secretary/Director-equivalent level across various central ministries.

International Representation

Singh has represented the interests of India on several high-profile global platforms:

• World Trade Organization (WTO): He was a key representative in Geneva during high-stakes negotiations regarding public stockholding involving eight countries.

• International Grains Council (IGC): In London, he contributed to global discussions on food grain markets and international stockholding norms.

Furthermore, he has convened numerous high-level meetings with foreign delegations to foster strategic international partnerships and enhance cooperation in global food security.

Post-Retirement and Advisory Roles

Following his retirement from government service, Singh transitioned into the private and non-profit sectors. He currently serves as an Advisor to the Sakha Group, which includes the Sakha Cultural Society, the Sakha Cultural Association (NGO), and Sakha Events Management Pvt. Ltd. In this capacity, he is spearheading the group's strategic expansion across domestic and international markets.
