Our main research areas are subsurface hydrology and environmental impacts of energy development. Application areas include groundwater and greenhouse gas emissions related to oil and gas systems and geologic storage of carbon dioxide, natural gas, and hydrogen.
We aim to quantify emissions of greenhouse gases and air pollutants and the extent of groundwater contamination from oil and gas systems, particularly abandoned wells, and urban infrastructure, including waste sources. To address these multi-disciplinary questions, we employ field studies using state-of-the-art sensors (e.g., laser-based gas analyzers), advanced geochemical analysis, novel measurement platforms, models of multiphase flow through porous media, and big data analysis (machine learning and geospatial analysis).
McGill University is situated on the traditional territory of the Kanien’kehà:ka, a place which has long served as a site of meeting and exchange amongst nations. We recognize and respect the Kanien’kehà:ka as the traditional custodians of the lands and waters on which we meet today.
