# Privacy Policy for Substack Archive Explorer
**Last Updated: January 21, 2026**
Substack Archive Explorer ("we", "us", or "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our Chrome Extension.
## 1. Information We Collect
### 1.1 Local Data (Client-Side)
The core functionality of the extension involves indexing Substack publications. All data collected through this process is stored **locally** on your device using IndexedDB. This includes:
* Post titles, dates, and interaction metadata (Shallow Indexing).
* The full text of Substack posts (Deep Indexing - Pro).
* Publication metadata (names, URLs).
**We do not have access to this data, and it is never uploaded to our servers.**
### 1.2 User Account Information
When you sign in to use Pro features or manage your quota, we use Google OAuth via Supabase. We collect:
* **Email Address**: To identify your account and manage your subscription status.
* **Profile Information**: Basic information provided by Google (name, profile picture) to personalize your experience.
### 1.3 Usage Data & Quota Management
To enforce daily indexing limits and manage subscriptions, we track:
* Daily indexing counts (linked to your account).
* Subscription tier and expiration date.
* License activation status.
## 2. How We Use Your Information
* **To Provide the Service**: To authenticate you and provide access to Pro features.
* **To Manage Quotas**: To ensure fair usage of our indexing services.
* **To Improve the Extension**: We may use anonymized, aggregated data to understand usage patterns (e.g., total number of users), but we do not track individual browsing history.
## 3. Data Storage and Security
* **Local Storage**: Your indexed archives are stored in your browser's IndexedDB. You can clear this data at any time through the extension's settings.
* **Cloud Data**: Account and subscription data are securely stored using **Supabase** and **Firestore**.
* **No Data Resale**: We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information to third parties.
## 4. Permissions
The extension requires the following permissions to function:
* **`storage`**: Used to save your settings and preferences.
* **`unlimitedStorage`**: Allows the extension to store large archives locally without being capped by browser limits.
* **`identity`**: Used for Google OAuth login.
* **Host Permissions (`<all_urls>`)**: Necessary to fetch archive data from Substack's servers, including those using custom domains.
## 5. Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services:
* **Supabase**: For authentication and user management.
* **Stripe**: For processing payments (we do not store your credit card information).
## 6. Your Choices
* **Clear Data**: You can delete all locally indexed data from the "Settings" page in the extension sidebar.
* **Sign Out**: You can sign out of your account to disconnect your email from the extension.
* **Uninstall**: Removing the extension will delete all locally stored data and settings.
## 7. Changes to This Policy
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date.
