SQ3R: Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review
Reading the textbook chapters related to what your professors will cover or have covered in class is a critical learning strategy. Using the SQ3R method will help you improve comprehension and focus as you read your textbooks. The goal is to read actively so that you learn more!
Survey
Before you read, survey the entire chapter, including the table of contents. Read and view the chapter title, introduction, objectives, vocabulary list, summary, review questions, bold words and headings, graphics, and accompanying captions.
Question
Based on what you saw in the survey step above, what questions do you believe will be answered when you read? What do you want or need to learn from the text? Create a list of these questions using the following words: who, what, where, when, why, or how.
The reason for creating a list of questions is to set a purpose for reading the material in the textbook. When you are reading to find the answers to specific questions, you are reading actively.
Read
Now, read through the chapter from beginning to end and pause at the end of each section to answer the questions you created. Highlight key points in the text and/or make brief notes about what you read (in the margins and/or in your notebook).
Recite
Answer the questions out loud to reinforce your learning or teach another person what you have learned. Make a list of key facts or terms you need to know. Your comprehension and retention will improve when you rewrite or rephrase what you read. Try this step after each section in the chapter.
Review
Reviewing is an ongoing process. Review the concepts in the chapter after you are finished reading and reciting each section and come back to it periodically over a few days. Summarize difficult sections and rewrite the major points in your own words. The purpose of reviewing is to help you retain and learn the information and prepare for the eventual test.
