"How Students Can AI-Proof Their Careers: Go wide and avoid hyper-specialization"

Focusing too heavily on one type of expertise could be a mistake if, as expected, AI eliminates lots of jobs in some specialties. It isn’t a risk only for technology fields like computer science; other fields such as accounting and finance are also being transformed by AI. Instead, experts recommend having a portfolio of skills.

“If you have one skill, you compete with the masses that have that same one skill,” says Anna Esaki-Smith, author of “Make College Your Superpower.” In contrast, she says, “Should you stack on another skill, you become qualified for a wider range of opportunities.” That could mean adding a minor or two to a major or going for a double major.

"The strength of UConn German is its ability to strike a balance between traditional focuses like grammar, language proficiency, and cultural immersion and nuanced focuses like intercultural citizenship and contemporary global issues, which directly concern subjects students study outside of German. That’s the thing: German was initially a side focus for me.  Not only is a German degree achievable, but it is also rewarding. Proficiency in a second language is a highly sought-after characteristic in the professional world.  Whether you want to study abroad, travel, gain new skills, or just engage in a new world of history and culture, UConn German offers a transformative experience that will broaden your horizons in an increasingly global society." "UConn German’s support system is truly exceptional.

If someone had told me at the beginning of my time at UConn that I would be living in Germany after graduating, I would have told them they were completely out of their mind. Yet, in the span of four years, I went from a novice to someone whose experiences with German will permanently impact my personal and professional development. What started as a whim is now a lifelong asset."
