The Great Movie Ride is coming back in all its glory but with a new, modern twist. This time around, the ride will feature an Omnimover track and a longer ride with more scenes! The new ride will celebrate the catalog of movies that have touched our hearts for years.
This version of the Great Movie Ride retains much of its original outside appearance based off the Chinese theater, with the paths having names carved into them in proximity to the attraction and keeping much of the building that’s a part of the archway, with the Chinese lions still being in the front, the symbolic arch and all of it’s beautiful inscriptions and details remaining there, the roof still being the same as it was, and the dragon painting at the top being the same. The doorways are still the same, the mimicry of the bamboo remains, and the gong and semicircle banner is kept, along with the flashy neon marquee signs with the ride’s name on it.
However, in order to make this area still feel grounded in Europe, the rest of the building’s architecture has been changed to resemble the Comédie-Française. The rest of the exterior of the building mimics this, with white Corinthian columns with shell patterns at the top, which ends up lining the top of the building, with spiral circle statues hanging from there as well. Underneath the pillars you have large hanging lamps from the side of the building illuminating the pathway. The walls are a creamy white on this side of the building in particular.
The floor of the Queue is stone tile, though the pattern of it is hexagonal, with the color of it being red with black lines in between, with a yellow maze pattern lined next to it on both sides.
Yellow-Bronze queue pole barriers form maze-like lines throughout the queue. The colors of the walls usually range from beige-yellow, red, orange, and purple throughout the line. The ceilings are green with yellow intersecting lines, with purple barriers with orange maze-like patterns across them.
Chinese inspired paper lanterns illuminate the queue, with oriental art that sometimes light up lie on the walls throughout these queues, along with posters that also glow sometimes as well. Instead of having props or movie screens showing clips in the queue, mosaic art reenacting scenes from popular movies in Disney’s catalogs are shown instead, with the occasional physical prop in the centre of it all, often guarded off from guests by queue-pole barriers and signs telling guests not to touch or get close to them.
Such scenes shown in through those mosaics are The Silence Of The Lambs Interrogation Scene, Forrest Gump On The Bench, The Jack And Will Battle In Pirates, The Home-Alone Booby Trapped house, The Greatest Showman “A Million Dreams” scene, The Sixth Sense I See Dead People scene, Newsies’ “Seize The Day”, The Sound Of Music Opening Scene, The Empire Strikes Back “No, I Am Your Father” Scene, The Princess Bride “Battle Of Wits” Scene, The Moulin Rouge’s Lady Marmalade Scene, and Fight Club’s Speech About Modern Life.
Eventually the Queue leads up to a clone of the original platform, with the queue leading into spruce wood gates, that are eventually opened by CMs when a vehicle is ready to be boarded.
The bright neon movie theatre based entrance and marquee still functions as a transition into the first scene of the attraction. While the stone pillars, the equipment props, and the dark sundown backdrop are still there along with the palm trees and bushes, however, the old mountain backdrop should be replaced with a near identical backdrop that’s brighter and newer looking.
Guests board their vehicles on the streets of 19th century Paris before entering into Le Grand Café and seeing the Lumiére Brothers showing off the first films. This leads into a dark room showing a grand montage of the greatest films of all time before the ride vehicles venture through a film reel.
When sound was able to be captured on film, the very first thing that was released with this technology was a musical and so, this journey through cinema begins there as well. As the vehicles round a bend, guests see Shirley Temple in Curly Top singing Animal Crackers in My Soup. After passing Shirley Temple, we get to see an icon of the Golden Age of Hollywood with Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes singing Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend. We then see Deborah Kerr (with the voice of Marni Nixon) in The King and I singing Getting to Know You to the children of the King of Siam. In a final bend, we see Emily Blunt and Lin Manuel-Miranda in Mary Poppins Returns singing Trip A Little Light Fantastic.
After your vehicle comes from the Musical Section, we reach the Adventure part of the section where adventurous heroes show their bravery and strength to overcome challenges. The first Adventure scene is Indiana Jones where an AA Indiana Jones is grabbing the golden idol when all of a sudden, a rolling ball comes down behind him. This effect is portrayed by a screen in the back showing the ball. From this you move to the next adventure scene, The Jungle Book. In this scene you have Mowgli facing Shere Khan in the trees. AA Shere Khan reaches for Mowgli and the Mowgli AA tilts back a little to create an intriguing moment.
Romance takes over next. First up is the finale of An Affair to Remember, with Deborah Kerr saying the iconic line "If you can paint, I can walk. Anything can happen, don't you think?" to Cary Grant. We then proceed to some more modern romance. Titanic is depicted with Jack and Rose on the bow of the titular ship, recreating the famous "I'm flying" scene. The nautical theme continues with Tangled as Rapunzel and Flynn Rider are surrounded by floating lanterns while they sing I See the Light. The scene ends with Love Simon's Ferris wheel scene with Simon and Blue kissing at the top while their classmates look on.
As the vehicle leaves the world of romance behind, it enter a dark mysterious jungle. Leafs in the trees shake and rustle, but nothing is up there? An eerie noise that sounds almost as if a woodpecker and an electric screwdriver had a baby plays above guests. Quickly a mysterious figure flashes by in the treetops, but is gone in an instant. This is an illusion to the Predator's invisibility technology.
The vehicle crosses underneath a grouping fallen trees. On the other side of the tree a crashed predator spaceship from Alien vs Predator is found at the trunks at tree, and two large cages are out of the ship broken up. What could've been in those cages? The answer comes to the guests from the right as from the foliage a Xenomorph pops up roaring at guests. In response large palm fronds on the other side of guests fall down to reveal an animatronic Predator as it aims its gun at apparently the guests.
The Predator shoots his gun towards the Xenomorph. The Xenomorph moves as if hit, and spits back towards the Predator. Guests are wet by the spitting, and notice that the Predator recoiled in pain as the spit melted through its armour a bit. As The Predator shoots at the Xenomorph again, another Xenomorph flings down holding onto a tree towards guests spitting at them. The first Xenomorph is killed, and sinks back down as mist smoke shoots up to cover him. The fight continues with the Predator and the second Xenomorph as the vehicles leave the scene.
As the vehicles leave the world of the Horror Thriller genre behind they enter the year 3000 with science fiction! What better way to celebrate the future with stories from a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. The vehicles enter the a village on Jaaku, and maneuver through skirmish currently happening between stormtroopers and the locals as they protect the location of Luke Skywalker's map. Kylo Ren uses the force to stop the vehicles, and force them to face his direction where he interrogates the guests as the vehicle shake. Poe Dameron pops up from the background and creates a diversion allowing guests to escape into the next scene. As the vehicles progress Palpatine's message to the galaxy is heard.
As the vehicles enter the wreckage of the Death Star guests will be able to watch Rey and Kylo Ren animatronics in a lightsaber battle before guests very eyes. Throughout the room pieces of debris will fly due to them trying to use the force. As the duel continues the vehicles leave the galaxy of Star Wars behind, and enter the realm of the Marvel Cinematic Universe featuring the Guardians of the Galaxy.
In the Collector's gallery of objects various Marvel macguffins will be seen in the collection as a way to play homage to the entirety of the MCU rather than just one specific film. Rocket pops up, and yells at the guests to launch into space already because they're part of the freakin' Guardians of the Galaxy. The vehicles enter a projection tunnel where they join along with the guardians in a galactic skirmish against the Sovereign. The vehicle is shot down, and spins around as it crash lands into an alien jungle proceeding into the Action sequences.
Moving out of the Sci-Fi section of the attraction, The ride moves under a tree branch, segmenting to a fight scene , with Jake kicking and grabbing Quartich, with a tree getting knocked down (Using Earthquake! Special Effects) by Quartich, and eventually Quartich’s Dagger being ‘knocked off’ (Actually just retracted into his arm), where the ride moves between a rock, to move to the next scene where Jake ‘jumps’ on Quartich (Jake is already mounted on Quartich, the illusion of Jake jumping is given by screens above the rock), and Jake stabs the EMP with the Bayonet (This is achieved by the Bayonet being placed in the EMP, but giving Jake the motions to let go, giving the illusion he stabbed it) and releasing air (Used by a smoke machine.).
Then we are briefly blocked by a tree, and using screens again, given the illusion that the EMP has thrown the Bayonet into the Valkyrie. Quartich shouts “Cmon!”, and using the tree block again, the hatch is shown on the floor, but the of it releasing is still played to give the illusion of it being popped off, and Quartrich is now wearing a mask, with his AA vaguely gesturing to give it the illusion of him putting it on. Quartrich says his iconic “Hey Sully, how does it feel to betray your own race?” line, and Sully’s AA hisses back and gives aggressive facial expressions. Quartrich says “You think you’re one of them? Time to wake up.”.
The ride moves around again to see him smash into the Valkyrie, noise and all, and the ride moves again to the next to see Jake on Quartriches back, and then screens show him being thrown off of it, when it happens again. We see Jake being hung by the arms by Quartrich, but suddenly Neytiri shows up and gives shooting motions with her crossbow, and the ride turns to reveal that she has shot and killed Quartrich.
Our ride now turns to behind the backs of Malcolm and Dreyfuss to look down at the Ape Calvary (The Size is maintained by using Optical Illusions on perspective to make them seem like they’re below us) ,We hear sirens blaring and chanting from the Apes, we move and see the gates opening from the Camera's perspective, with the Apes on horses standing in front of us. We turn to see the human crowd walking out to meet up with the apes. We hear Dreyfuss say “Malcolm” and then we see Malcolm walking out to the ape calvary alone. We turn to see Malcolm and Caesar on his horse meet eye to eye to speak. Caesar says “Apes do not want war, but will fight if we must.”. We turn again to see and ape giving the bag to Malcolm, in which Caesar says “Ape home!”. Caesar points to the human crowd, “Human Home! Do not come back!”. As we turn to the next scene, the apes begin to leave.
The ride then turns it’s way into a church filled with people, and as you move into this scene, you meet eye to eye with Hart. A sharp ringing noise adjacent to an off-key electric guitar. A woman in the crowd starts to get aggressive with Hart, yelling at him from the background. Hart turns around and raises his gun to fire at her, which just releases smoke. The AA of the woman slowly falls to the ground so it doesn’t break her model but with enough moment to make what happened clear---- He shot her.
The crowd suddenly gets rowdy and begins to break out in a shrieking riot. Hart starts to shoot at multiple AA figures of people as well with the smoke effect continuing, and the same mechanic happening among these figures. The ride starts to turn as you move around the church, with Hart killing more and more people. We see people with planks, chairs and knives bashing around, and at one point Hart even shoots above us while he’s standing on a bench. Of course, the gun only produces smoke so don’t worry about people getting shot. Benches and stand begin to crumble using the Earthquake effect. We see Hart pounce on people and shoot them as we navigate from scene to scene as well as him dodging attacks and using his extremities. People get banged into organs, playing off key music, and we see people being flung around using a similar effect to the one seen in Twister when the Cow is flung around in the air.
Valentine phones in for a moment and we listen while Hart continues to bash people with objects and even spray them in the face. The fight continues as it is, going on and on as Hart stabs and attacks people. A sound adjacent to a high pitched phone ringing happens, and the ride temporarily slows down but then continues back to normal speed. Eventually Hart stands as the lone survivor among a sea of bodies, panting in shock in front of the guests.
We move into the final scene of the Action portion of the Great Movie Ride, as we move onto the scene of a skyscraper, where we see Hans with the gun, shooting (which still just produces smoke) into a sea of people who are all screaming in panic as they desperately try to duck for cover. We move into another scene which appears to be inside a helicopter, which uses screen technology for the windows to mimic flight. We hear the FBI give orders on flight and talk about the Terrorist attack currently going on at the top of the skyscraper.
We quickly see an overview using perception manipulation again of the ongoing scene. We then move back to the Helicopter Replica and we hear as they command to “Shoot that Sucker” and the side of the helicopter opens to a screen. We move over and see Hans shooting his gun around all over again, and we watch as the FBI begins to shoot back at him. We see hans jump, and the FBI commands to turn over again, and then we exit the scene.
We follow panicked people running down the staircase in a desperate attempt to escape the attack. We move down to the next scene which has smoke as AA people try to escape. We move to a scene of Hans wrapping a firehose around his abdomen. We then transition to a scene where we briefly see people fleeing, and to the scene of the detonation preparation. We move back to Hans as he prepares to jump, and with the perception effects again, police lined up at the bottom of the road waiting patiently for him. Using the same aforementioned Twister effects, the helicopter swerves over and opens up to reveal an AA of an FBI Agent with a gun which uses forced perspective aiming at Hans. We move quickly out of the scene to a scene using the Twister effect to make Hans fall, with the model of the skyscraper exploding thanks to special effects as we speed out.
Moving out of the Action Sequences, we take a unique turn and begin to walk among a calvary of egyptian soldiers into Rome. At the sides of us we have crowds of roman people watching us as we travel up our way to Julius Caesar, who is sitting on his throne with his laurels and an advisor at his side. Behind him is a huge temple with lions statues and altars. Next to him are wealthy women sitting on chairs behind grand statues of gods and temples, with lotus flowers next to them in pots. On the other side of Caesar are the philosophers, the rich, and the soldiers on fancy red and gold chairs, sitting in front of the ends of the same temple.
The vehicles rotate to show many workers wheeling a replica of the sphinx spouting fire from the top of it’s torches to the front. Cleopatra is visible from the top of it. This effect is achieved by using tracks similar to ones you would see pulling an escalator pulling the sequence forwards, and then pulling it backwards when it resets. In order to prevent accidents, blockages are put at the front and end of the track, and several safety features as well. Repairs regularly are to happen to prevent accidents just in case. We hear and see the crowds cheer for her. We hear Caesar say “”See how unafraid she is?” with the advisor leaning in to hear. Smoke rises from the statues. Some figures are animated to stand up for her.
We move to the next scene, where she has been brought down from the sphynx onto the carpet to speak to caesar, with servants supporting her on her throne. She stands up from the throne and bows to Caesar. The crowds go ballistic. We move out into a detour route near the statue and arrive at the next scene.
Following the same type of path used in Cleopatra, we walk among an Exodus of formerly enslaved israelites on their voyage to freedom. They are walking on sand wet from rain that has since passed that came from storms. Heavy Clouds still remain though and loom above the traveling group. A traveling group that contains entire families and everything they had left from when the Egyptians took over and controlled their lives, stripping rights away like bark from a tree one by one.
Suddenly, one figure turns his head back, and we turn around in his general direction as well. Something is noted---- a siege led by the near entirety of the Egyptian’s military is occurring at the people’s heels! The calvary starts to rush faster and faster. Since from a distance these people would look like tiny pinpoints and are on chariots, a similar mechanic is used from the type of swinging back and forth animation from a carnival game which is utilized with forced perspective. Noah calls for everybody to run, and we do. We run with the Israelites with the natives, and as the ride vehicle turns, we notice the army coming right behind us, although they don’t move because that can’t be simulated. We finally are cornered near the sea, and they have surrounded us with the group. They raise their swords and weapons, prepared for a massacre.
A massive twister happens, shown in similar fashion to Twister - The Ride. It appears to be fighting temporarily against the Egyptians, and once again the swinging effect is used to shown chariots and men being tossed around like baseballs. Our attention turns to an AA of Noah, as we turn to the next scene, as he uses a similar effect used in Posideon’s Fury to open up the Red Dead Sea! We follow the Israelites once again through the path in a desperate attempt to escape the egyptian’s wrath, and Noah follows. Eventually, when we get to the next scene, the Ocean rears it’s head and falls back together normally, and people rejoice for their newfound safety and freedom. As we turn to exit the ride, we pass the sea and see drenched chariots floating and bobbing in the waves, some washed up with the tides.
The vehicles leave behind the film epics, and enter a loading area filled with memorabilia for movies that are upcoming, or at least relatively new. Upon the ending guests are welcomed back to the real world, but are encouraged to enter the post show theater. The post show theater plays two films at once a short film montage similar to what existed prior in the original Great Movie Ride followed by a sneak preview at either the next upcoming Disney or Fox film.
Toy Story Playland has been said to be boring and not a lot of fun rides to get on. This is why Toy Story Midway Mania will be coming to Toy Story Playland in 2023. The new ride will replace Toy Soldiers Parachute Drop and the entrance to Backlot Tour/Cars Route 66. The version of the ride will feature some new scenes. The first new scene will be feature Ducky and Bunny from Toy Story 4. The two plush toys will take you to Knock Down the Clown where you try to shoot as many moving clowns on the screen. The second new scene will feature Hamm where he will show all different types of coins for you to shoot down. Overall, the land will receive the new shooter ride and minor refurbishments.
