Our vibrant costumes department is bringing to life the world of Nerakhis and Reikwald through beautiful, hand-sown costumes. Get to know a bit more about their process!
Our process begins in the drawing table. After a few brainstorming sessions and lots of Pinterest boards, we come up with a design that is both faithful to the essence of the character in the book and fit for the stage. Our goal is to create iconic costumes that tell a story and reflect the philosophy of our story, but that also feel real, like the actual clothes that could have been worn in that world if it had existed.
Our commitment to sustainability and an new way of theatre-making extends to our costume departments: we source most of our fabrics from thrift stores and we up-scale old, used fabrics by giving them a new life in our costumes. Not only does this align with our philosophy, but it allows us to craft an amount of costumes that would otherwise be beyond our budget.
London and Mina working on Calanthe's dress
The enthusiastic members of our costumes team have already been working for months on their designs. Some of them choose to tackle their own project, being able to pour their own creativity and ideas into it, while others prefer to shadow fellow team members and learn whilst helping. We welcome any level of expertise, and different members bring their own skills to the table, whether it's sewing, wig-making, knitting or drawing. From Alea's ethereal dress, to the rugged clothes and antlers of the Li'shuann, to the flowery and bark-like tunics of the nymphs, all costumes are painstakingly crafted from scratch.
If you want to be a part of our team and have a space where to develop your costuming skills with fellow students while working in a theatre project, don't hesitate to reach out!
