We presented our works, Fabric Re-engineered as Product and Mending with Mycelium at the 75th Annual Meeting of The Textile Machinery Society of Japan.
About The Textile Machinery Society of Japan
"The Textile Machinery Society of Japan was founded in 1948 as an association of people involved in the textile industry with the aim of advancing and developing the science of textiles and textile machinery and contributing to the development of related industries. Since then, the society has developed its activities based on cooperation between industry, academia and government in various fields, including textile manufacturing, yarn making, weaving, knitting, non-woven fabrics, dyeing and finishing, sewing, all industrial materials, nanofibres, e-textiles, design, fashion and related equipment and devices".

Fabric Re-engineered as Products
Introducing the collaborative research project Fabric Re-engineered as Products between colourloop Co. Ltd. (colourloop) and Kyoto Design Lab. The project emphasizes the relevance of design in the revaluation of upcycled textile materials and explores novel applications of the Waste Fiber Reinforced Plastic Sheet (WFRP Sheet) developed by colourloop.
This case study includes product design as a part of research, and therefore heavily relies on the processes of hands-on making and prototyping. The presentation at The Textile Machinery Society of Japan describes in detail the steps taken in the design and product development stages; material explorations with colourloop's WFRP Sheet, tool and method selections, and the failures and findings that led to the final product outcomes.
Mending with Mycelium
"Mending with Mycelium" is a speculative design project about humans and mycelium collaborating to repair shoes. The presentation aimed to introduce the potential of speculative design and storytelling for imagining alternative and sustainable futures in the field of textile research, engineering and production.
