Ethos
The artistic aspect of photography can be enjoyed and shared without the need to spend money, make money or receive attention.
History
Studio 6x4 began in 2017. We established a workshop and gallery in a small building in the north of England, created this Google Site and began experimenting with photobook printing. Our shop and blog appeared in 2018 and the following year we published the first issue of our zine, Fotograu, which is available online and in print. It wasn't until 2020 that we were able to mount our first exhibition in the gallery, titled PANIC and Other Photographs, which was a retrospective of 62 photographs made during 2017-2019.
Amateur Art Photography
Studio 6x4 is devoted to amateur art photography: devoted means given over to the display, study, or discussion of something; an amateur is someone who engages in a pursuit on an unpaid rather than a professional basis , or is incompetent or inept at a particular activity; and art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power (Google, 2022). So Studio 6x4 is given over to the display, study and discussion of photographs, produced by unpaid, incompetent and inept people, to be appreciated primarily for their beauty and emotional power.
All Things Free etc.
Our ethos and devotion to amateur art photography mean that we don't use restrictive copyrights, watermarks or blocks on downloading. Instead and in support of Creative Commons, we adopt the free CCBY-SA licence, which allows anyone to reuse, distribute, remix, adapt and build upon our work in any medium or format, so long as they provide an attribution and license any modified material under the same terms.
Studio 6x4 uses secondhand, analogue, digital and mobile phone cameras to capture images; Google, Android and Linux apps for editing; Google Slides for graphics and layouts; Yumpu for electronic publications; Lulu for print and ebook publications; Redbubble for postcards and badges; and Blogger for blogging. Everything is free, except where Lulu and Redbubble set minimum base prices to cover their own costs.
This is our commitment to all things free, open-source, inexpensive and non-profit.
Books, Badges & Postcards
Studio 6x4 books and zines are available from the Lulu bookstore in both print and ebook (PDF) format. Our profit margin is set to zero, so prices cover printing and delivery only. Ebooks are free. Zines can also be viewed in flipbook format at Yumpu.
Studio 6x4 badges (pins) and postcards are available from our Redbubble shop. Again, we take no profit, so prices cover manufacturing and delivery only.
Photopoetry
The Studio 6x4 blog is where we continue our experiment in combining photography and poetry, which began with Fotograu 006.
