Iwan Syahril, born in 1976 in Padang, Indonesia, is a system architect of human potential. The former Sampoerna University Education Dean holds a dual-major PhD and an honorary doctorate from Michigan State University, alongside two master’s degrees from Columbia University. Iwan has the rare ability to bridge profound philosophy with massive-scale execution, combining educational depth, practical simplification, and multilateral credibility to distill complex systemic challenges into an actionable mission focused on its core purpose. 

From 2020 to 2025, he served as Director General in Indonesia’s Ministry of Education, first for Teachers and Education Personnel, then for Early Childhood, Primary, and Secondary Education. He spearheaded the “Merdeka Belajar” (Emancipated Learning) reforms, navigating the extreme geographic and political complexities of over 17,000 islands and 552 decentralized local governments to reach more than 50 million students, 420,000 schools, and 3.3 million teachers. He managed up to a $220M budget and, at one point, oversaw a 10,000-person staff structure while leading a national overhaul, achieving proficiency gains of up to 33%. He also professionalized 800,000 teachers, mobilized 100,000 leadership change agents, scaled digital transformation to 4 million teachers and 300,000 schools, and drove his organization into McKinsey’s top-quartile performance. 

Internationally, Iwan Syahril has built a distinctive profile as both a multilateral strategist and a system transformation leader. He chaired the G20 Education Working Group during Indonesia’s 2022 Presidency, guiding negotiations on quality education, digital transformation, lifelong learning, and post-pandemic recovery, and overseeing a landmark compendium of more than 150 best practices from 26 countries that helped shape the education contribution to the UN Transforming Education Summit. He also chaired the ASEAN Education Ministers and Senior Officials Meeting, and served on UNESCO’s Teacher Task Force Steering Committee, contributing to global advocacy and strategy for strengthening the teaching profession. 

He currently advises major global organizations, governments, and school networks to engineer resilient, future-ready learning ecosystems in the age of AI. He is Senior Advisor at the Global Institute of Teach For All, co-leading the Global Institute Fellowship for Transforming Systems (GIFTS) and serving on the Global Institute’s Global Advisory Council. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of Universitas Negeri Padang, Board of Supervisors at TBS Foundation, and is adjunct professor and a member of the Industry Advisory Board at Monash University Indonesia. He has advised the UNESCO-UNICEF Gateways Reference Group on global standards for digital learning platforms, and is the author of “Students, Students, Students! The Human Journey in Leadership and System Transformation,” a recent book on the human and strategic dimensions of leading change at scale.
