The Student Oceanographic Society (SOS) is a student run organization created to promote, inform, and improve the undergraduate experience in oceanography at the University of Washington. Membership is open to any University of Washington student regardless of their academic plan of study. There are no dues or requirements for participation in SOS. Our lounge is located in OCN Room 111, please feel welcome to use the room anytime to study, hang out, have lunch. Meet our leadership team below!
Meet the SOS Leadership Team!
Sophie is a senior from Mukilteo, WA, majoring in Oceanography with a minor in Climate Science. She’s especially interested in trace metal biogeochemistry, as well as ocean acidification and inorganic carbon in the ocean. She currently works in the Bundy Lab, where she did a project this summer on the sources and identities of iron-binding ligands in the Southern Ocean. She also volunteers with the Washington Ocean Acidification Center (WOAC) on their seasonal cruises around Puget Sound. In her free time, she enjoys listening to music, baking, watching baseball, and playing board games with friends.
Nicole is a senior from Marysville, WA double-majoring in Oceanography and Marine Biology. She's interested in marine invasive species (specifically, European Green Crab), and zooplankton community structure. Over the summer, she had an internship with NOAA (Ernest F. Hollings) where she did research on trapping for European Green Crab in Homer, Alaska. At UW, she's the Peer Tutoring Center Student Coordinator and an undergrad representative on the College of the Environment Curriculum Committee, and is passionate about peer-education and student learning. In her free time, Nicole loves hiking, baking cookies, playing with her roommate's cat, and going on adventures.
Jackson is a Senior from Golden, Colorado majoring in Oceanography with a minor in Climate Science. He is interested in all things cryosphere, from glaciology to polar microbiology. He currently works in the Deming Lab with Sea Ice Bacteria and spent this past summer as a part of the Juneau Icefield Research Program. Jackson enjoys hiking, running, skiing, reading and anime. You can catch him riding his bike around campus with an insanely neon orange backpack!
Morgan Palmer is a junior in Oceanography and Aquatic Fishery Sciences. She is currently working on a project to map microplastics in Puget Sound. She is involved in Valentine/ Ogston sediment dynamics labs and enjoys reading and playing guitar outside of school!
Jood is a junior from Saudi Arabia majoring in Oceanography with a minor in Data Science. She's interested in Ocean technology and physics - environmental monitoring and other scientific applications. At UW, she’s the president of the Saudi Student Association, and volunteers with CIRCLE to help international students. Jood enjoys crocheting, baking, traveling, film photography, and music!
Dereck is a Junior from Poulsbo, WA double-majoring in Oceanography and Marine biology. He’s especially interested in ecosystem dynamics and the relationship between environment and behaviors. Over the Summer, He took the Conservation of Marine Birds and Mammals course at Friday Harbor Labs in the San Juan Islands, WA. There, he and a few other students conducted research on how bird flight patterns changed with different tides. He also later was a TA for the GEODUC program, a program designed to introduce transfer students to Marine Biology and Oceanography. In his free time, Dereck loves hiking, kayaking, board games, reading, coffee and traveling.
