Crises To Watch
Wars, natural disasters, genocides
Wars, natural disasters, genocides
After Hamas' horrifying attack on Israel on October 7th, Israel responded with an even more horrifying genocidal onslaught against the people of Gaza that has killed tens of thousands, destroyed virtually all infrastructure in Gaza, sparked a famine in the Strip, and destabilized the Middle East, with spillover into Lebanon, Syria and the West Bank claiming thousands more lives.
In 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine, sparking a war that has killed hundreds of thousands of civilians and devastated both Ukraine and Russia. War crimes by Russian forces are rampant, and genocidal tactics have been employed against the Ukranian people, including massacres and the abduction of children to repatriation centers.
In 2021, the Army of Myanmar overthrew the Government and established a Military junta. After peaceful protests failed, the situation escalated into a civil war that is in a stalemate as of June 2025. The situation has been exacerbated by the earthquake in March which killed thousands, destroyed infrastructure, and from which the country is still struggling to recover months later.
In 2023, fighting erupted in Sudan's capital, Khartoum, between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces. This quickly escalated into a Civil War that has killed hundreds of thousands and created the worst famine in the world right now: As of June 2025, over half a million children have died and nearly 25 million are facing extreme hunger.
