Being only 2 inches high causes a lot of problems, so Stuart gets into many adventures. A little bird named Margalo gets injured and the Littles provide a home for her. Stuart becomes great friends with her. But when she flies away, Stuart must leave his home to look for her. This book is perfect for people who like funny stories.

The first chapters are sort of coherent, if you read them as an absurdist or surrealist piece. Is being accepted as a humanoid mouse any different from awaking one day as an insect? Or is it some metaphor for the the extended struggle of the little man in the big city? The eloquent schoolkids are no less surreal than the angelic talking bird or the 2- inch tall girl. Maybe the malevolent cat represents the impersonal, plausible capitalists who really are out to get you.

In rereading Stuart Little over the past few days, I remembered that as a kid, I often carried a small purse with me that held a (stuffed) mouse and additional items that would be useful to a mouse. One day as I was crossing a river by way of a swinging footbridge with my mother, I fell and lost hold of the strap of my little purse. My companion mouse and their special items fell over the edge into the river and were swept away. I quickly told my mom I\u2019d lost my purse, and we ran downriver to search for it. I still regret that we did not find it. I can only hope that my lost mouse found help and companionship on their way exactly as Stuart Little did in his various adventures. Stuart sailed a model boat on a lake in Central Park, fell into a garbage truck, and floated out to sea on a barge (and was rescued!), was a substitute teacher for a day, and traveled to find his lost friend on his own. ff782bc1db
