100 years ago, nineteen women, under the guidance of Father Ignatius Remke, were instrumental in organizing the St. Theresa Guild of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. Their purpose was to further the spiritual, social, and financial welfare of the parish. The first Guild meeting was held at the little wooden church on West 4th Street in Winston-Salem, presided by Miss Elizabeth Vorbrink. St Leo's church on Springdale Avenue has replaced the little wooden church; however, the St. Theresa's Guild remains true to the original precepts set into motion in 1927 by its charter members with dedication, dignity, and pride.
Countless dedicated members have been inspired to promote the goals of the Guild. Over the years, monies realized from bake sales, card parties, dinners, rummage sales, bazaars, and promotions have enabled the Guild to financially assist our priests for the good of the rectories, church, and school. In addition to financial help, the women of the Guild have provided many hours of unselfish assistance in support of parish activities and spiritual aims. There have been countless rosaries, memorial Masses, spiritual bouquets, and days of recollection. Apart from church activities, members have provided both financial support and time to community organizations such as Crisis Control, Right to Life, Birthright, Salvation Army, and Catholic Charities to name a few.
All of our activities have enriched us in many ways. Being together and working side by side with a common goal to help others has benefited our lives as well as theirs. Our spiritual lives have been enriched through our spiritual activities. Only through working together in an unselfish manner have the original goals of the St. Theresa's Guild been obtainable.
We implore St Theresa to continue to guide us in her loving way to do great things in a little way.
O Little Theresa of the child Jesus, who during your short life became a mirror of angelic purity, love of God and wholehearted abandonment to his will, now that you possess the Lord you so deeply loved, plead my case before his holy throne, make my troubles your own.
You promised to spend your Heaven doing good upon earth, come to my help by granting my humble request if it is for the greater glory of God and the good of my soul.
Dear Little Flower, obtain for me the blessing that I may have strength in the trials of life and be defended at the hour of my death.
Lead me to a happy eternity.
Amen
