Travelling to and from Vienna
Vienna is very well connected with most major cities in Europe and worldwide. There are several possible ways to get to the Austrian capital:
By plane:
The main Viennese and largest Austrian airport is the Vienna International Airport, located 18 kilometers southeast of Vienna, near the city of Schwechat. The airport serves as a hub of the Austrian Airlines, the flag carrier of Austria and a subsidiary of Lufthansa. Low-cost airlines like Ryanair also have their bases at the airport.
The Austrian Airlines provide several connections per day with the airports in Munich and Frankfurt in Germany.
Other airports well connected with Vienna are located in Innsbruck (Austria), Bratislava (Slovakia), Budapest (Hungary), and Prague (Czech Republic).
Travelling between the Vienna International Airport and the center of Vienna. To travel between the Viennese airport and the city center one can use the following means of public transport:
train: There are two types of train connections between the airport and the downtown. The first one are regular trains operated by the Austrian railways ÖBB. They are categorized as Railjet trains or Schnellbahn S7 trains. They run every 30 minutes and usually stop at several Viennese train stations (e.g. Wien Mitte, Wien Hauptbahnhof, Wien Meidling). The travel costs 4.10 € and lasts around 25 minutes to/from the station Wien Mitte, located close to the city center and connected to the metro lines U-3 and U-4. The second type are green City Airport Trains (CAT) which stop only at the station Wien Mitte. They also run every 30 minutes and the travel costs 14.9 € and lasts 16 minutes. The schedule for CATs can be found here.
bus: Bus connections between the airport and the city center are operated by the company Vienna Airport Lines. Buses stop at several places in the city, with the end stations being located at the Western train station Wien Westbahnhof, connected to the metro lines U-3 and U-6, and at Schwedenplatz, located in the very center of the city and attached to the metro lines U-1 and U-4. A ticket for one bus ride costs 10.5 €. All the information concerning bus connections can be found here.
taxi: One can also travel on a taxi from and to the airport. It is strongly recommended to use only official taxis, standing in the waiting line in front of the arrival hall of the airport. The cost of the ride between the airport and the city center is around 50-60 €.
By train:
You can reach Vienna easily, but not necessarily quickly, travelling by train with the Austrian railways ÖBB. On the website www.oebb.at you can check the current schedule and connections, also provided by other national railways (like Czech CD, German DB, Polish PKP, etc.).
The main Viennese train station, called Wien Hauptbahnhof in German, is located south of the downtown and well connected with the rest of the city, e.g. by the metro line U-1 and trams. Trains arriving from western directions (e.g. from Innsbruck or Munich) usually stop also at the station called Wien Meidling, joined to the metro line U-6.
By bus:
Bus connections with Vienna are provided, e.g., by Flixbus. There are two main bus stations: the first one is located at Südtiroler Platz near the central train station Wien Hauptbahnhof, and the second one, Vienna International Busterminal, lies in the district Erdberg, which is connected with the city via metro line U-3.
By car:
There are several important issues related to travelling to Vienna by car. First, driving through Austria requires a valid vignette on almost all motorways and highways (one can buy a vignette online). Second, parking in the city is rather difficult as parking spaces are usually scarce and in general not allowed for non-Viennese residents. The best solution is to park either on a hotel's lot or in one of a few Park & Ride lots. The latter is also the cheapest option, costing only 4.10 €/day, while parking on hotels' lots usually costs 15-25 €/day. For the list of P&R lots see e.g. here or here. The P&R lot closest to the conference venue is Spittelau.
Transport in Vienna
The easiest and cheapest way to travel around Vienna is to use the city well developed public transport, which in central parts of the city consists of metro (called U-Bahn in German), trams, and buses. The schedule and connections can be checked on the official website or in the Google Maps. Tickets can be purchased in numerous ticket machines, located in metro and train stations or on board trams (though note that the latter ones sometimes accept only coins). A single ride ticket costs 2.40 € (2.60 € on board trams). A weekly ticket costs 22.6 €.
