The Brookfield Conference Center is the venue for this year's convention and can accommodate up to 450 attendees. The Hilton Garden Inn Milwaukee Brookfield Conference Center located at 265 S. Moorland Road in Brookfield Wisconsin is attached to the conference center by a convenient enclosed walkway on the first floor. The hotel block is now closed, but you can still book a room outside of the block.

Protection. We can easily project the image of a soldier protected by a strong tower, deflecting enemy missiles and providing a place to rest. Soldiers are provided protection by good commanders for two reasons, because they have individual personal worth and so that they can be effective in fighting the enemy.

Identity. Human nature strives to be known and accepted. Our own profession, the military, has provided identity to many who are searching. A strong tower clearly provided the identity of the sovereign for those within. We do not have to search for identity.

Power and Courage. A soldier protected by the ramparts of a strong tower has a double advantage over an unprotected soldier exposed to the noise, confusion and danger of the battlefield. He has the power to observe and launch his weapons, and he has the courage to continue the fight bolstered by the knowledge of the protection of the strong tower. No matter what may come our way, we have the power of God to be actively involved in the fight.

Message. The same Hebrew word used for tower in Proverbs 18 is also used in Nehemiah 8:4-8. After the wall had been rebuilt, Ezra read the law from a special high pulpit (tower) where all could see and hear him. A strong tower proclaims a message first of all by its physical presence. Then it provides a place from which individual messages can be proclaimed.

There are many people today who try to make wealth their fortress, unscalable wall. They believe that if they acquire enough of it, build up a high enough wall of it, that the problems and difficulties of the world will not be able to climb over. The reality is that problems and difficulties have a pernicious and tenacious way of building siege ramps against the walls of wealth, and they breach even the highest towers. Problems also find ways to tunnel under the strongest human fortress.

Money is not the place to look for security. Scripture tells us that God is the source of our strength and protection. God is described as a rock, a shield, a fortress, a foundation, and a fortress. In Proverbs 18 quoted above, the Lord is described as a strong tower.

During the time when Proverbs was written, a strong tower was a place of safe refuge that was sturdily built and heavily fortified. Strong towers were built to hold large amounts of food and supplies. It was a place of safety and a place of provision. When an enemy attacked, the people of a village found protection and provision in the strong tower.

Reflection: The idea of the LORD (or even just His Name) as a strong tower is most reassuring! Each one of us needs a refuge, a place to run to, when we feel pursued by enemies or overwhelmed by life itself. But have we considered its protection when we need to be saved from ourselves? Ponder the verses leading up to Proverbs 18:10. They warn us of acting like fools, of talking like fools, of being gossipers and slanderers, and of being just plain lazy. Ouch!
