Transportation in Hamburg
Tickets for buses, trains (S-Bahn) and underground (U-Bahn) are the same, and they can be purchased from the website of HVV.
We recommend downloading the HVV App, to buy tickets paying with cards, PayPal or SEPA direct debit.
From this year, it is possible to buy HVV Prepaid cards from many ticket machines, that can be used alternatively to the tickets bought via the app. Some stations allow buying single tickets from the ticket machines, but not all the stations have this possibility.
Bus drivers do not accept cash anymore, and it is not possible to buy the ticket on the bus.
Lunch Suggestions
In walking distance from the conference venue, we recommend to look for small restaurants, bakeries, cafés, etc. around Grindelhof or the center city area close to Stephansplatz.
Food in Hamburg
The conference takes place in the city center, and a simple Google search should find restaurants and bars that satisfy any participants' need. For people that have never been to Hamburg or Germany before, we can list some typical dishes:
Franzbrötchen: sweet pastry usually containing cinnamon, typical of the Hamburg area.
Labskaus: dish consisting of beef, potatoes, beets and sometimes eggs, pickles and herrings, typical of Northern Germany.
Fischbrötchen: sandwich made with fish and various other ingredients, typical of Northern Germany.
Königsberger Klopse: dish consisting of meatballs, served usually with potatoes.
Currywurst: dish made with boiled and fried sausages, served with curry-spiced tomato sauce and sometimes fries, typical of the Berlin area.
Leberkäse: traditional German product consisting of ground meat baked into a meatloaf.
Döner Kebap: original Turkish meal, whose modern sandwich variant was popularized in Berlin by Turkish immigrants.
Schnitzel: (debatably) original Austrian dish consisting of breaded and fried meat, whose Hamburg version sometimes add fried eggs on top.
Bratkartoffeln: dish consisting of pan-fried potatoes.
Kartoffelpuffer: German potato pancakes.
Spätzle: Swabian egg noodles, sometimes accompanying meat dishes or mixed with grated cheese.
Flammkuchen: Alsatian bread dough rolled out thinly covered with various ingredients.
Semmelknödel: bread dumplings made from bread mixed, usually, with milk and eggs.
