In addition to considering the societal aspects of chronic stress covered in a standard section of PSY 3000, this course will consider the cultural differences in how people globally deal with chronic stress and stress reduction. Specifically in Southern Italy, it will consider both the perception and management of stress in current Italian (European) culture and chronic stress and stress reduction in ancient Mediterranean cultures (Roman and Greek).
The course will also consider the dual effects that travel and global experiences outside our native culture have on our stress levels. Travel is often associated with relaxation and stress reduction but usually causes increases in stress as we navigate novel situations and different cultural expectations. These travel-related effects on stress and happiness and cultural differences will addressed through daily discussions and stress regulation practices as well as cultural excursions investigating the importance of family, food, nature, and free time to modern Italians and visits to Roman and Greek ruins related to stress reduction and happiness (bathhouses and amphitheaters).
