when sarah was two months old, cadence and jason faced a nasty divorce as cadence learned the criminal world he was a part of.  furious that he would do such things and endanger their family, she won the lawsuit that completely cut him off from her and their children.

when sarah was six months, cadence started feeling deep senses of paranoia.  she knew she was being watched.  she knew jason was angry, and that her life was certainly in danger.  desperate, she made a will and, within it, left her kids to her older sister, mary, asking the woman to never put her babies up for adoption.  jay would never have them, so there was nowhere else for them to go besides a sibling, all other family deceased.

cadence was killed when sarah wasn’t even a year old, though the circumstances of her death were never truly discovered.

personality wise, cadence was a dreamer and a wild heart.  a dancer and a lover of art, one might consider her a bit airheaded and a hippie.  yet she was kind and fun, quite the opposite of jay.  she was eager to go out often, to travel, to party, and to spend time with her children.  her ability to hold a grudge was powerful.  cadence held people in high regard and would never tolerate betrayal of any sort, so the revelation of jay did not entice her to join him.

Jason Halloway

jason was a criminal who tried to have it all.  the wealth, the family, and the ability to get away with anything.  that wouldn’t come to pass as cadence found out not long after their second child was conceived exactly what he was doing to make so much money.  an asset handler, jay was responsible for his client’s own wealth or trading items ( drugs, women and children, weapons, etc. ).  taking care of off-shore accounts, overseeing smuggling, he worked with a variety of kingpins and gangs making sure their things were secure and incapable of being tracked, busted, or stolen.  trusted by all and protective of what he did, he had allies in many places guarding him from police or those attempting to do him harm.

one of his good friends, a kingpin name damon, inspired him to make what he partook in into a family business. originally, jay didn’t care too deeply about the divorce and loss of his kids, but seeing damon’s son involved caused the handler to want the same.  so jay went to north carolina to kidnap his eldest, alister, and returned to train him.  yet, alister wasn’t too keen, and the boy slipped from his grasp.  it was alister’s confessions to police that landed jay in jail where he remains for most likely the rest of his life.

personality wise, jay is awful.  while he’s a great businessman and did well with his partners and clients, he never made friends outside of that other than wooing cadence.  even that was just so he had something of an alibi… made him look like a normal family man.  in the end, he cares about money and getting the job done, but currently his only care is trying to get out of prison.

Alister Halloway

three years older than sarah and the firstborn of jason and cadence.  he was struck hard by his mother’s death and hated his aunt and uncle when he was placed with them.  however, he didn’t have to worry about them long as his birth father, jay halloway, kidnapped him and took him to new york to be his successor in the crime world.  unfortunately for jay, alister didn’t want that, so he ran away and met hallie, who took him in as her own.  with alister’s confession, jay was arrested and locked up for a long, long time.  he’s always wanted to meet his little sister who, to him, is an enigma lost in time.  he barely even remembers her, but he doesn’t know where or how to begin looking for her.

personality wise, alister is a stubborn semi-jerk.  exceedingly loyal, however, he’s an amazing friend and son.  but you just don’t want to be on his bad side.  a member of his university’s football team, part of a frat, an overwhelming flirt, and sometimes too pompous for his own good, he is a star at school on the field ( as much a star a second string can be, at least ) and off.  but once you get to know him, you would never think he’s the jerk he can be, opting for humor and just making sure everyone around him is having fun.

Hallie Gregson

a nurse in chicago, taking care of patients and cats and adopting alister when she found him as a child.  incredibly intelligent and compassionate, she’s perhaps one of the nicest women you’d ever get the chance to meet.  she is in love with and currently dating david.  she raised alister happily and wants nothing more than to keep her family strong.  her two cats are lilith and mindy.

David Mckinney

a doctor that hallie is presently dating.

personality wise, david is serious.  he doesn’t really joke around often, but is known to be light hearted with those he cares for.  it’s not that he’s incapable of fun – when he’s happy, he is genuinely happy – but he simply doesn’t mess around or get off course.  his work is important to him as a doctor.  when he’s relaxed, he loves to recline in a chair with a beer and laugh at stupid sitcoms with hallie.

Abigail Kim

though her grandparents on both sides were from south korea, abigail was born in america and even given an american first name.  her parents both even met within the states while attending college together.  while they raised her to be bilingual, she hasn’t actually even been to south korea as all her family now resides in florida where her father works for the american based department of a korean company.  her mother and younger brother in high school tend to her maternal grandmother who is suffering from dementia, her maternal grandfather having passed away three years prior.  her paternal grandparents are healthy and living happily retired.

she attends school, planning on becoming a therapist for children as she adores working with kids and wanted to work in a medical related field that didn’t require needles.  she met alister at a party where her quick wit and denial of his advances won his interest in her.  she’s well aware he’s still a flirt with all the other girls, but she has her hand on him.  quite bold and strong-willed, she’s certainly no pushover.  however, in her core, she’s a sweetheart who adores children and is smitten with the loving, silly side of alister that he displays frequently for her.

Mary Trulane

the woman who took care of sarah for nine years of her life, disguised as her mother.  facing financial trouble, mary and her husband abandoned sarah when she was only ten, leaving her at a neighbor’s for “camp” and fleeing during the week. 

she did hold some love ( or at least care for the child’s wellbeing ) for sarah, however, and left important documents for the neighbors to find so that they could properly tend to the child.  the woman was also concerned when alister was taken.  however, between robert’s firm hatred of the kids and that fact she had been at odds with cadence due to jealousy against her younger sister while growing up meant that she still went through with the horrible deed.  cadence had always been the more popular and loved one, leaving mary on the sides and forgotten.  in the end, the aunt wasn’t evil, just misguided by robert, who manipulated her anger to follow his own.  she could have been a loving mother if not so obsessed with being wealthy and adored.  they never made the adoption of the two kids formal, thus no connections of sarah or alister even belonging to them can be found.

compared to robert, she’s far nicer and open.  she adores timmy and feels regret towards what happened with sarah and worry for alister’s life.  when timmy’s around seven, she and robert start facing a divorce, as the man never quite had a love for children in his heart, and mary realizes she wants better in life and robert will never give it.

Robert Trulane

the man who took care of sarah for nine years of her life and alister for far less, but he only disguised as sarah’s father after alister was kidnapped.  facing financial trouble, robert and his wife abandoned sarah when she was only ten. 

did not hold any love for sarah, he wanted to get rid of her and alister from the start as he never wanted children, especially two of his wife’s sister’s.  often emotionally abusive and cruel to them both, he did nothing when alister was taken, and the brother and sister duo have both come to despise robert within their minds.  he and mary never made the adoption of the two kids formal, thus no connections of sarah or alister even belonging to them can be found.

is now a successful banker and has made plenty of money though he and mary divorced.  he does pay a lot of child support for timmy in return.

Timothy “Timmy” Trulane

timmy doesn’t have much of a recollection of sarah.  only two when she was abandoned and six when he witnessed her arrest.  his parents – namely his father – told him that she was a poor girl who had gone delirious, hence her attacking him.
