The celebration of Black history started as Negro History Week founded by Harvard educated historian, Carter G. Woodson. The civil rights movement of the 1960s helped elevate Negro History Week to national prominence, and turn it into a month-long celebration. As a result, in 1976, President Gerald Ford made things official, proclaiming February to be Black History Month.
Many of us have heard of Rosa Parks. But 9 months before her historical move to not give up her seat, Claudette Colvin, a 15 year old pregnant black female nurse's aide, was arrested for doing the same. Why was Claudette Colvin not as famous as Rosa Parks? Many historians now admit that civil rights activists chose not to give her the attention she deserved because she was pregnant and unmarried.
The first public high school for African Americans, Paul Laurence Dunbar High, opened in Washington,D.C. in 1870, just 5 years after the end of the Civil War. It was originally called the Preparatory High School for Colored Youth and founded by William Syphax. In 1916, it moved and was renamed after Dunbar, the acclaimed Black writer. The school graduated many luminaries including the first Black Army General, the first Black presidential cabinet member and the first Black graduate of the Naval Academy.
