A Prayer for Patriot Day
In the spirit of the Episcopal Church’s liturgical resources and the call to remember and renew our commitment to peace and freedom.
O God of peace and mercy, On this solemn day we remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and all those who have since given their lives in service to our nation. We lift up the souls who perished in the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and the field at Shanksville, and welcome them with loving arms into Your eternal kingdom.
Grant comfort to their families and friends, that their grief may be met with Your compassion and strength. Help us to mourn alongside them, rooted in Your love and guided by Your justice.
We honor the courage of the first responders, the selfless acts of those who opened their homes to the displaced, and all who stood against hatred and violence. May their example inspire us to live bravely, to protect others, and to be hospitable in spirit.
O Lord, in whose Name the founders of this country won liberty for themselves and for us, grant that we may maintain our liberties in righteousness and peace. May we never take for granted the freedoms won in generations past, and may Your wisdom lead us to better ways to live together with humility, civility, and generosity of spirit.
We pray also for an end to violence and terror, that peace may grow in our hearts and in our world. May the light of Christ be our perpetual guide, and may we be steadfast in pursuing justice and peace.
Amen.
