A typical Sunday service at St. Peter's is divided into 4 main parts:
Gathering
Our Minister or speaker welcomes us all, makes any brief announcements and we begin with an opening prayer (confession and forgiveness) followed by a gathering song (typically a hymn from the cranberry-coloured books provided). This gives us all a chance to center our hearts and minds for the service to follow.
Prayer of the Day is lifted up by our pastor/presider.
Word
This portion of the service focuses on the reading of God's Word (from the Bible). St. Peter's follows the Revised Common Lectionary so we typically have three readings from the Old and New Testament (read by minister, guest speaker, and/or volunteer readers) and a Psalm reading (which we read together in some form-these are also located in the cranberry coloured book provided).
Following the readings, our pastor/speaker will share a 10-15min long sermon that will share insights about one (or more) of the readings in relation to God (i.e. what God was doing in the text, what God is doing for us today, who God is, and how this applies for us in our lives in this world today).
Hymn/Song of the Day (we lift up our voices once more in song-typically a hymn from the cranberry-coloured book provided)
We then say aloud/read the Apostles' Creed or Nicene Creed (also located in the cranberry-coloured book)
Our minister/speaker will then lead us in prayer (prayers of intercession for the world, for our loved ones, for those suffering various injustices, etc.)
Following the prayers we are wished peace and wish peace for others (sometimes this takes the form of "Sharing the Peace" with one another-this could be extended by a simple nod in someone's direction, a peace sign held out to all, a handshake or hug, stating "peace" or "peace be with you" to your neighbours...or however else you would like to extend a sign of peace and grace to others in that moment).
This portion of the service concludes with the Lord's Prayer (which we all recite together)
Meal
When we have an ordained minister presiding over our service, we will celebrate and share in the Eucharist (Communion).
EVERYONE is welcome and invited to participate in this sacrament with us. You are also welcome to simply be on our midst while we partake.
Sending
Our pastor/speaker will speak a blessing over the congregation
We sing a sending hymn
We are sent out into the world strengthened for our lives of service in Christ's name
