How It All Began...
The original Sports and Social club was formed in 1947 by ICI and was extensively used by all workers of ICI. In 1999 PPG secured 80% of the Stowmarket site, which included the recreation club buildings from ICI. The new company decided the Sports and Social Club should be separated from the main company and kindly agreed The Meadlands (a fifteenth century building) would be available to the new club (renamed Stowmarket Meadlands Recreation Club) along with a redundant warehouse which would house the Club’s Bowls and snooker Sections. More recently (August 2015) the Indoor Sports Centre was refurbished with a separate room for the growing Snooker Section, along with up to date facilities in the kitchen and toilet areas, benefiting both the Bowls and Snooker Sections.
The recreation club managed to obtain a venue for the Badminton section (Needham Market Community Centre) and has purchased Barham Lake for the Angling Section.
As the Club became independent all the facilities were opened to all members of the public. The current membership is around 2500 members.
