One paragraph is telling the governor that you have solar panels, and the other one says that you do not.
Then, add your name and the town in Florida that you live in at the bottom of the email.
Please add anything you feel would help communicate to the governor how much you want solar to remain as a viable option for Florida citizens.
Hello Governor DeSantis!
This email is regarding the HB 741 Net Metering bill, which has not yet been presented to you. I do not want you to pass this bill, as it will be moving Florida away not only from a sustainable way of life, but away from economic opportunities.
Choose the Context that applies to you, and delete the other paragraph:
I have solar panels in my home. For me they are a way to save money over time by not having as high an electric bill, since I am making my own energy. When the panels make excess energy that I do not use, I sell the energy to the grid and receive credit which I use to buy energy from the grid when I need to. Solar energy is one way I am choosing to make smart economic choices, and I ask that you do not take that choice away from other people in Florida. My place is already secured with solar, but others are not as fortunate. People who have yet to buy a home may want to install solar panels but will not be able to because of the effects of the HB 741 Net Metering bill.
I do not have solar panels in my home yet. However, I think that solar would be a way for me to save money over time by not having as high an electric bill. I would be able to sell the energy to the grid and receive credit which I would be able to use to buy energy from the grid if I needed to. Solar energy is one path that I want to pursue in the future, but I am not able to at this time. I ask that you do not take that choice away from me, and others like me who have not been able to invest in solar yet. Do not take that choice away from me by passing the HB 741 Net Metering bill.
The new Net Metering bill would slowly take away one of the main benefits of investing in solar panels, which is selling my excess energy back to the grid. After 2025, anyone who starts using home solar panels will receive less credit for the energy they sell back. Each year after 2025, the credit new solar panel owners receive drops more.
This bill also states that the utility can recover “lost revenues” through the fuel and purchased power cost recovery charge from customers who added solar that are in the utility's service territory (section H1 of the bill). That means that if someone switches to solar in the future, they will be charged for not using the energy from the grid.
Solar energy is the future of Florida both economically and environmentally. I, as a resident of Florida, want to live in a state where we are actively pursuing sustainable, clean energy, such as solar energy.
I also value my independence. Clean energy options in Florida allow us to rely on ourselves, rather than any foreign oil, coal, or other fossil fuels that are used to generate electricity for the grid.
Solar gives Florida citizens independence from the large electric companies run by a select few individuals who are making decisions that impact all of us. These people make these choices without any influence from the public. I do not feel as though this is the best way to approach this economic situation.
I also believe that solar should become more accessible for Florida residents. This bill, if passed, will make it so that solar energy is far more inaccessible than it is already. Solar panels are an energy source that not everyone can afford. This bill would make it an irresponsible investment for everyday people. This source of energy would only be an option for those with disposable income. Renewable energy should be an accessible option for all of Florida, especially since we all will be reaping the consequences of Global Climate Change. We should all have the resources to participate in the solution. The bill is short sighted, and purposefully ignores the benefits of converting to sustainable energy sources in favor of the outdated system in place.
Although we live in a free market economy, you would not be able to see that reflected in our energy system as it is today. How our system is set up now, I as a consumer may not have the freedom to choose which electric company I get my energy from. I have very limited options, and that does not make for good competition. However, with solar energy, I have a wide selection of companies that I can do business with. This makes pricing competitive. The direction we are heading in with the new Net Metering bill is one where the electric companies have a monopoly on power in their area. I value free enterprise, and I want it to thrive here in Florida, and the new Net Metering bill puts our free market economy in jeopardy.
This bill does not accurately represent the feelings of the people in the state of Florida. According to a Mason-Dixon poll, 84% of Floridians support net metering. Moreover, a recent Sachs Media poll found that 86% of Floridians want you to veto HB 741.
I ask you Governor DeSantis to veto the HB 741 Net Metering bill.
