Step into a realm where the echoes of centuries past resonate with the tap of mallet on chisel. A truly unique immersion into an ancient craft, guided by a Master Mason whose lineage stretches back through nearly a millennium to the very artisans who shaped the courts of British and French royalty from 1080. In our workshops, tradition is not merely spoken of; it is a living, breathing entity.
This is more than simply working stone; it is about handing on an irreplaceable heritage. Our Craft Master embodies an unbroken chain of knowledge, passed down through generations within the City of London – subtle nuances and intuitive understandings many never committed to paper.
His journey is a testament to an unwavering pursuit of mastery. Trained in seventeen sculptural style including the intricate Anglo-Dutch-Danish and Franco-Flemish styles, his quest for deeper insight led him on an extraordinary 14,000-mile pilgrimage across 47 countries. There, he sought out and learned from the last living exponents of the Northern Italian Renaissance and Maltese styles, absorbing their techniques and philosophies, weaving them into his already rich tapestry of expertise.
This profound odyssey has forged a true Court Master Mason, a discipline encompassing the full spectrum of architectural and sculptural stone and marble: from delicate carvings and embellishments to the precise arts of intaglio and letter cutting. His expertise extends beyond the stone itself to the plastique disciplines – the creation of maquettes, moulding, and casting in diverse materials – and even encompasses ancillary arts such as pigment and paint creation, the ancient art of cocciopesto, the delicate touch of gilding, and the transformative power of paint effects and polishing.
His international renown is well-earned, his hands having shaped spaces for European and Middle Eastern royalty and contributed to the enduring beauty of heritage architecture in iconic cities such as Rome, Venice, Paris, and our own London. Years immersed in the exquisite design and craftsmanship of the 17th, 18th, and early 19th centuries have gifted him with an unparalleled understanding of this pivotal era. He is now among a select few worldwide who still employ the techniques and visual proportions of this time, a period deeply intertwined with the Enlightenment and its explosion of ideas in science, philosophy, and music. Indeed, music, poetry, philosophy, and the inherent beauty of natural form are the very cornerstones of proportion in all his work.
Stephen believes stonemasonry in its purest form represents one of the pinnacles of human artistic, spiritual, and cultural achievement. Throughout history, great civilisations have defined themselves through stone, and the skill of the mason has been central to shaping their identity. From ancient wonders to the modern metropolis, architectural stonemasonry and civic sculpture remain the most widely viewed of all arts, silently contributing to our well-being, the quality of our lives, and the vibrant character of our cities.
Today, alongside creating breath taking one-off feature pieces, he increasingly collaborate with clients to realise comprehensive design visions, harnessing the power of proportion, the inherent beauty of materials, and the language of design to evoke specific emotions and create desired moods.
