When you have urostomy surgery, you have to drain your ostomy pouch several times a day. Well, the frequency of drainage depends on your drinking. The more you drink water, you will discharge liquid waste frequently from the body. Moreover, it also depends on the medicines you are taking. Many pills and syrups are the reason behind the frequent discharge of the liquid. Well, drainage of the urostomy bag is not rocket science. You will need help in the early days of operation. However, once you learn the method, you can drain, empty, and clean the appliances.
How to Drain the Urostomy Pouch?
You can drain the urostomy pouch while sitting or depends. It depends on your comfort. In whichever position you feel cozy, you can empty it. You can stand beside the toilet. You need to unfasten the bottom of the ostomy bag. You can drain the urine from the below of the sack. You have to empty the content into the commode. If you are using a one-piece ostomy pouching system, then you will have to replace the entire system once a day or every other day. Whereas, for a two-piece pouching system, you can change it after a week. You can replace the baseplate or flange twice a week.
Before draining the urostomy pouch, you should have all the necessary tools in your hand. The liquid comes out of the bag suddenly; thus, you need to be careful.
How to Change the Urostomy Pouch?
To change the urostomy pouching system, you should make ready all the tools before removing the previous one. You should know about all the tools and everything should be ready in your hands. First, you need to drain or empty the ostomy bag. After draining, wash your hands. You should use antibacterial soap and a medicated sanitizer (especially in the current situation of Covid-19 Pandemic, you have to be a little more watchful). You should use an adhesive remover to remove the pouch off. You can use your hands, but the adhesive remover will soften your skin and provides your skin ease and comfort while you take out your bag. An adhesive remover will give you a gentle feel.
Throw the used pouch in a dustbin. You can use wipes to handle the used urostomy bag. Clean the skin with wipes and wear the new one.
How to Clean the Stoma and Skin Around It?
Well, after removing the urostomy pouch, you should wash your hands (as I mentioned above). After that, you should clean the stoma and surroundings. Do not use rough wipes or hand towels for cleaning the stoma and peristomal. You can use water for the washing of the opening; however, the water should be luke-warm. After washing the stoma with the water, you will have to dry the entire area. You should use wipes to dry it. Move the towel or wipe gently on the skin. Do not rub your skin or make fast movements of the hand. Throw the used tissues in the dustbin. Again, wash your hands and use a sanitizer. Well, you can use a medicated soap for the cleaning of peristomal skin. Once, your skin is dry, apply the new pouching system.
