Helping my child at school

There are many ways to help your child at school, we have provided links to information which you may find useful:

Home Learning

Children will be encouraged to extend the skills taught in school through further practice and research at home. The time spent on this should vary according to the age and development of the child. Homework might be set as follows:

  • phonics, spelling, word lists
  • practice in mathematical processes
  • reading of novels/short stories
  • practice in language conventions
  • home reading book
  • research/information collection
  • practice in skills of physical education
  • practice in musical activities
  • voluntary work, i.e. writing stories, poems, sketching, etc.

As homework is for the benefit of your child, you are asked to co-operate by seeing that the work is completed and the homework signed. It is not the teacher's responsibility to insist that homework is completed. Parents/Carers/pupils have this responsibility. Concerns about homework should be communicated to the head or depute head teacher and an appointment with the class teacher will be organised.

From P5 - P7, choice is given in Family Learning Tasks set termly. Like learning at school, Family learning should be active. This engages and challenges children's thinking. Children learn best when they are playing, talking, exploring and investigating. Family learning tasks encourage this type of learning.
